4 stars (6-Day Body Makeover) - This diet works! Preparing the food takes a bit of time but is well worth it 5 stars (IT WORKS!!!!!) - I followed the plan with some slight modifications (flavored water) and lost 7 pounds in 6 days! More importantly though was that I learned how to eat healthy and control my portion sizes! I have been sticking to the plan for 2 weeks now and feel the best I have felt in a long time. I even sleep better since I started this plan. The plan works!!!! I tried to eat some junky greasy food last night (yes I cheated) and it made me sick. I don't even want that type of food anymore! Try the plan you will be very glad you did! 5 stars (It works but it is hard) - This diet works but it is way difficult to stick to. It is especially difficult if you have kids. I bought this as a way to see if I wanted to by the 6-week body makeover. I decided not to and went back on Atkins to keep my weight loss going. If you are just starting a weight loss program, I recommend this as a good diet to jumpstart with, because it works fast, teaches you to incorporate more vegetables into your diet and to eat more times per day so that you aren't ever hungry. ... 1 stars (negative) - I ordered the 6th edition and received the 5th edition. However, delivery was fast, but i still have to return the book. WOuld recommand everyone to ask a question to the seller before ordering the book just to make sure that the book YOU need is the one Seller is selling! ! It sucks when you receive a wrong book and have a quiz next day in the class ! ! 1 stars (BORING!) - This book is dull and boring....in fact, I would never have purchased it if it wasn't required for my college class. Everything in here is common sense or if you watch the news, you all ready know everything presented. I started reading the first chapter and it completely put me to sleep, now when preping for a test, I mearly browse through the book and read the required definitions that will be on the test. 4 stars (A helpful book on maintaining a healthy life) - The reason that I purchased the book was because of the health class I was taking at college. As I read through the chapters, they really interest me, and remind me of little things that I have always tend to forget. There are no big theories in the book, just simple "life little reminders". When I purchased this book, it also comes with a workbook, which contains review and practice tests to help you to reinforce the ideas. The book helps me to correct some of my daily bad habbits. And even the class is over now, I still read the book sometime to learn more. I think this is a great book for readers who would like to live a healthy life and to take control of themselves, just like me. ... 4 stars (Warning!!! Only read if you want better health, longer limbs etc) - This is a good read. I didn't give it it's fifth star because not all information is new, however it's written in an easy to follow way and if you begin it right away, the results will happen right away. The effects were amazing and you'll notice a difference fast. This is the perfect addition to any exercise collection whether it be in books or dvds. Buy this and begin immediately. You won't be sorry. 5 stars (Self Health for Procrastinators) - Wow no more excuses! This book is so well laid out that even the most resistant amongst us can master this. The results are the hook. The immediate difference is felt and there is a seduction to the exercises that made me keep turning the page.Great mood, great muscles, here I come. Good Morning America show gave too little time to Bob Cooley and stretchers because the book deserves more attention -the best selfhelp tools I've ever read or experienced. Many thanks to Bob's genuis I can own mine. 1 stars (The generosity of Genius) - Through incredibly diligent perseverance over many years. Bob Cooley is able to share the many crucial secrets to human vitality that are described in this book. Don't miss them! They certainly have improved my life. Hyperbole fuels Bob's enthusiasm. If you are a doubter just keep breathing and try the excercises a few times and perhaps you, too, will be laughing and enjoying some outrageous trust in how extraordinary life can be. ... 5 stars (Success with "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue) - After two years of listening to my friends rave about diminishing the pain from sports injuries with the Egoscue exercises, I finally purchased my own copy. I was amazed at how easy the exercises are, and neck and shoulder pain I had for years diminished after only 10 days. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a drug free way to conquer pain. 5 stars (Really Works -- say goodbye to chronic pain) - Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time, 10 to 90 min depending on your problem, but the results are amazing. Everyone I've convinced to actually sit down and do E-cises for their chronic pain problem has experienced noticable improvement after just one session: weak knees, aching wrists, sore ancles, stiff neck & shoulders, headaches, and more. If you have any sort of nagging discomfort, even a minor one, give "Pain Free" a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised! Egoscue also has a radio program Saturday mornings in Colorado, which is how I first heard of this book, and clinics where you can get a personalized E-cise plan. 5 stars (Amazing Book, it really works!) - The book is amazing. I have a really bad back from working jobs standing on my feet all day. Someone told me about this book at work and I now do the exercises daily. The exercises require no stretching, 30-40 minutes only. The exercises use gravity to pull your body back into it's functional state. Using the book is like going to a chiropractor every day, only it does not cost several hundred dollars. Dr. Pete Egoscue is truly an amazing human being for sharing his knowledge. Once you read the book and use the exercises it will make total sense! The body is meant to move and be active, not to sit down all day due... 5 stars (Aspie's Read This Book First) - I picked this book up when my 7 yr old son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. I quickly discovered that I'm just as Asperger's as he is. This book has taught me more about Asperger's than my son's school or even his psychologist. If you truly want to understand Asperger's in all of it's flavors you must read this book. I've begun to understand myself in a whole new light and have found this book to be as comforting and reassuring as it is educational. 5 stars (The Asperger "Bible") - Of the several I've read, this book is absolutely the most comprehensive and well written available on the subject of Asperger's Syndrome. Thanks to the foresight and dedication of Barb Kirby in establishing the OASIS website and on-line forum, parents from all over the world are able to come together and compare notes on behavior and strategies, resulting in an enormous knowledge bank to draw from. Along with that, the authors present the combined wisdom of the various "experts" and discuss pros and cons of various treatment options, based primarily on actual experience and outcomes, with plenty of surveys, official statistics, and scientific studies. I had to laugh out loud early on when the authors state that if nothing else, it is an impressive book to plunk down on the table at school meetings! What really makes this book different from any other, is that the authors are both also mothers of kids on the spectrum, so you feel connected and understood while reading the book - truly an OASIS for anyone struggling to understand, respect, protect and champion their Aspie kids! 5 stars (A Must for Families or Professionals working with Aspergers) - This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise. Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but unt... 4 stars (A real tool for attaining health and fitness for life) - Body for Life for Women should be considered an essential guide for women's preventive heath. Because it is focused specifically on the unique health and fitness needs and problems encountered by women, it is much more valuable for women than general health or diet texts. While it promotes a plan of "12 weeks to a fabulous body"; to see it as a mere diet or fitness book sells short its real value. A diet book may help us (temporarily) lose a few pounds; this book aims to show us how to create a healthy body in which we can live independently throughout our lives. As a spokesperson on health, Dr. Peeke is the real thing. She is an expert on the most current understanding of nutrition, preventive health and women's issues. The book is well written, inspiring and accessible. It gives women, especially those of us over 40, real hope and guidance as we wonder why "what we have always done" to stay fit is not working any more. I found especially interesting the section on life milestones, which describes a woman's health priorities at each stage of life. The mind principles, which urge us to examine the attitudes that shape our behavior, are a wake-up call. Dr. Peeke is a big fan of the Nike slogan "Just Do It". In this book, she tells us exactly what it is that we must just do and provides the tools and motivation to keep doing it. 5 stars (You won't believe it!) - I have completed my 12 week program and am astounded by the results. I'm 53 and a dancer but I never thought my body would return to this level of fitness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't intend to stop my regimen because I feel so good and the weight keeps coming off. I've already added almost six pounds to my muscle mass and my fat percentage is now 23.8%. 1 stars (Inaccurate and vapid) - If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it. The reader is left with a blinkered and rather utopian model of our current public health system - one that glosses over existing problems and presents only the most simplistic assessments. You might learn something if you're just beginning your public health studies, but for the rest of us, this book just isn't worth its exorbitant price tag. 5 stars (Wow...) - Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers! 4 stars (Good guide to understanding Public Health) - This book really tells us what the Public Health is and how it works, as the title suggests. Even though data or statistics cited are somewhat outdated, you can understand the fundamental meaning of PH. ... 5 stars (Thumbs Up for Access to Health) - I just completed a health class and this was the textbook we used. I learned so much from using this book. This book is precise and to the point. It provides you with colorful pictures, charts, and definitions that's superb. It provides great information on Weight Management, Cancer, Heart Disease, Illicit Drugs, and Alchohol. No health class should go with out this book. This is defintely a great teaching tool for those that are taking a health class, or simply a great reference guide. I give this book five stars. 5 stars (Excellent!) - The 1999 Edition of Access to Health by Donatelle and Davis is excellent! User friendly writing style, colors, charts, references, and a comprehensive collection of chapters that cover all the key personal health related topics. From human sexuality to societal violence, the text covers all the bases. The authors have worked hard to bring this Edition up to date with the most current health research references/topics. I strongly recommend considering adoption for any introductory personal health course. ... 5 stars (Good stuff!) - I tried out a couple opf recipes - they range from easy to lengthy. The time estimates for the recipes are on the low side. Probably correct if you have an entire kitchen full of trained staff. Other than that the recipes are awesome. I didn't think that my schedule permitted me to cook like this. 5 stars (great food for athletes) - We've had the book for a few weeks now and have sampled some recipes. Not only is the food good, but the preparation is easy and it doesn't have expensive "exotic" ingredients that make cooking at home more trouble than its worth. I was a little wary of the way the plan/meals were broken down, but after reading the text (there's a lot), it was well-explained and made sense for both athletes and folks just looking for healthy food choices in a busy lifestyle. I own all the Carmichael books and think they're very helpful and informative for cyclists and general athletes. 2 stars (Impractical ) - I was disappointed in the cookbook. We are not gourmet cooks. I assume many of the recipes are from the restaurant the chef runs. I was looking for a down-to-earth guide to nutrition for an amateur triathlete. 4 stars (Good step forward) - I'm not finished reading yet, but I've learned some very important information to helop me get and keep my blood sugar levels in a normal and safe range. 4 stars ( Dr RIchard Bernsteins Completre Guide to Normal Blood Sugars ) - I found this book to be valuable ifor the resources, which is in and of itself extremely important, and his common sense approach, which is necessary to keep from the worn out phrase "leading authority", goodness knows we have too many of those these days, and it ends up a work of art and refeshing in it's honest approach. Do this and this is the rusult you will arrive at. TRUE. As for me he is a hero, however I simply cannot live on 25 carbs a day. MADELINE B OGLE PhD 5 stars (A LIFESAVER-IF YOU'RE SERIOUS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH ) - Like others who have reviewed the book, I had very poor blood sugar control on the ADA diet. I hit rock bottom in 2004 when I suffered several weeks of blindness, and was unable to work. I have now lost about forty pounds, and have average blood sugar readings in the 120 range. Previously, my average would have been at least one hundred points higher. When I get off the diet, my blood sugar goes right back into the two and three hundred range instantly. I have had improvement in symptoms. For example, the feeling in my extermities is much better. For the present, my diabetic retinopathy has stabilized, which I pray will continue. I do not find the diet change to be much of a sacrifice. That might be because I experienced the horror of having the disease completely take over my life. It can be inconvenient to eat out, but with a little creativity, I have a diverse and appealing menu. I have not been to Dr. Bernstein's clinic, but hope to go eventually. I recommend the book to any diabetic I meet, and consider it the principle reason for the improvement in my health. ...
