Theory and Practice of Group Counseling with InfoTrac

3 stars (student manual for theory & practice of group counseling) - very pleased with the quick service. The book was in very good condition 5 stars (A fantastic text. Full of information, easy to understand.) - I was fortunate enough to take my group counseling class from Dr. Corey himself at Cal State Fullerton. The experience of learning from and being coached by Dr. Corey was amazing, and allowed even further insight into this text. The formula of the book is easy to follow. Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself. A must read for anyone training to be a counselor! 5 stars (Excellant Group Counseling Book) - I am using this book in a graduate level group counseling class. I have found it to be very useful. It gives you an excellant overview of the various theories and how they can be utilized within group counseling. The Corey's have also produced a video tape of a group counseling session that also provides so valuable information. ...

A Child Called -It-- One Child-s Courage to Survive

4 stars (Wonderful Insight into Resilence and Protective Factors) - I had been wanting to purchase this book for quite some time, but never got around to it until it was assigned for a psychology course I was enrolled in. True, it is a short text, and true, the grammar is not perfect - but it is not meant to be. Pelzer wrote the book as an adult, but tried to write it from his perspective when he was a child (the time period when he actually experienced the events detailed in the book). If this book had been written from a purely adult, grammatically "proper" perspective, it would have gained a more "distant" tone and thereby lost some of it's power to really grip and touch the reader. The text can be read in awe of what Pelzer experienced as a child, certainly. But that is not all one can gather from it. The trianglization, power struggles, and family dynamics which play out throughout the story are not only dramatic, but very clinically realistic. The potential effects of alcohol use on family structure are an eye-opener. And most of all, one should note the protective factors David found in his life which enabled him to survive his mother's horrendous patterns of abuse - while they are not nearly so dramatic as all the "punishment" he endured, they are just as significant. This would be a good book particularly for anyone who works with children (or plans to), whether they are a psychologist, counselor, educator, social worker, mentor, or even a parent. Too often adults see only the negative things that have happened to a child, and fear the effects that those things may have on the child's behavior or personality... it is just as important to be able to recognize what strengths, talents, and interests are in children which allow them to cope with or overcome negative factors. 1 stars (laundry list with no context) - If the abuse was real, or if even part of it was, my sympathy goes out to the author and my praise for rising above it. 4 stars (Good resource and guide) - This book is a good tool to use for small groups, fellowship studies, or sunday school class. I used it for my college sunday school class to place emphasis on embracing our Christian community. While John Ortberg does a good job at painting the picture for us, it is basically his "The Life You've Always Wanted" book re-done for small groups in a practical way. I enjoyed using this guide but had to restructure the questions and format to cater to a sunday school environment. I would recommend making sure you know your group, and understand their needs, and perhaps come up with additional questions to meet the needs of your group. ...

An Unquiet Mind - A Memoir of Moods and Madness Vintage

5 stars (Brilliant, Insightful.) - For this reader, the most insightful message in the book was the view of behavior (and mental illness) as lying on a continuum. Many of us do not fit the "norm" on the bell curve, yet we continue to thrive and produce in spite of or because of our differences. 5 stars (An Amazing Book) - Having a bipolar disorder is not easy for either the person that has it, or people that are close to that person Kay Jamison took a chance and wrote about her own disorder, without knowing the consequences of what might happen to her job. She did it so others might understand and appreciate what it is like to deal with. I am a professional woman, and considered successful by those who know me. However, it is always a battle, even with medication, to deal with. I have never known what "normal" felt like. I read her book and finally found a kindred spirit, even though I have never had the opportunity to meet her. I have given this book to my husband, my parents and friends. It has helped them, as well as me. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness) - This is a moving account of the author's experience with bipolar disease (or as she prefers, manic-depressive illness). Though Jamison has co-written "the" textbook on the subject, this book is written for lay people, and in that regard is very readable -- no technical jargon -- and full of information that helps one understand the condition. ...

Groups - Process and Practice with InfoTrac

2 stars (Late shipping) - The company indicated that it will ship in 2 business days. 24 days later, I finally got the book. I believe that there advertisement was greatly fabricated and I would have paid the extra to get my college textbooks here on time. As a result, I ended up buying my textbooks on campus and finally mailing the book back to the company when it arrived a month later. 4 stars (Excellent Material, But.............) - The Coreys have enormous understanding of group processes and the book contains a lot of very valuable material. BUT, the Coreys also use about three times as many words as necessary to make each point. They repeat the same ideas over and over again, making the book very tedious to read. It is valuable reading, however, if you can suffer through all the verbiage. 5 stars (A good book, but . . .) - I thought this book would be cheaper at amazon.com, but alas, strangely enough, I can get it cheaper at my college's bookstore. I will think twice from now on before I buy from amazon.com ...

Tuesdays with Morrie- An Old Man- a Young Man- and Life-s Greatest Lesson

4 stars (Tuesday's with Morrie) - A short story that makes you reflect on your life and whether or not you are achieving the dreams you set out for yourself. I recommend it. 5 stars (All About the LITTLE Things) - Yeah there is no way to describe the book. To capture the essence of it, the story behind it or what you come away with. Other then it reminds you of the basics of life and all that jazz in a non-boring-lecture-the-teacher-is-a-moron-kinda-way... ::sigh:: Read the book and then share the love and the knowledge! Buy it, pass it on. Whether you say it changes your life, or not, it does not matter. For though I believe it hasn't changed mine, it express what I have felt is the forever the fundamentals of life, and what needs to be remembered and enjoyed. (Combining my accounts, I originally wrote this May 20, 2002) 5 stars (To all the "Dick Wagner" and "Jon W " reviewers out there ...) - I feel sorry for you cold and disconnected individuals. If this book did not touch your soul, or move you to tears, I would be concerned about your ability (or inability rather) to empathize. This was one of the most sincere, honest, and poignant books I've ever read. It was well written - short and sweet. Morrie never claims to be philospher! He is simply a wise, gentle, and enlightened man who shares what he learned throughout his lifes journey. We should all be so lucky to know a Morrie in our life, and I thank Mitch for writing such a touching and compassionate book. This book is a MUST read. ...

The Five Love Languages for Singles Chapman- Gary

1 stars (Devolves into Christian dogma) - When I read the original "5 languages of love" 3 years ago, it changed the way I related to the important people in my life. I also learned how to ask others to show their love in a way I could understand. So, when I saw that Chapman had written a book for singles, I ordered it immediately. I couldn't be more disappointed. While the original book presented sound and common-sense psychological research and insights, the newer "singles" book has devolved into far-right Christian dogma. While the original book was 'descriptive', telling one how to show love in a way one's mate could understand, the new book is 'prescriptive', demanding that one have "wholesome" relationships according to ultra-conservative Christian sensibility. The section on "loving touch" repeats over and over that sexuality is to be expressed only within the bounds of marriage, a view that won't help the majority of possible readers. Even if you're single, skip this disappointing book and find the original in a used bookstore. 5 stars (It is great!) - This book is great! I learned so much not only about how I like to be loved but also about how others like to be loved. It has changed my perspective on interacting with my friends, family, and future husband. I have received great responses from the people around me that I care about. 4 stars (Great book) - Chapman has done an excellent job at coming down to the fundamentals of the ways people feel loved. The love languages he describes can be in any relationship, not just dating relationships, but the book focuses on these types of relationships. He gives EXCELLENT examples of people he has counseled regarding how to show interest and affection to the one they want to develop a deeper relationship with. The book help demystify and clarify some of the communication gaps that go on in relationships. It is an easy read, and a book that I highly recommend for people look to improve their relationships, platonic ...

Leading Life-Changing Small Groups

5 stars (Small group training manual) - Our congregation has used Bill Donahue's Leading Life-Changing Small Groups as our primary reference manual for training small group leaders for over 5 years. It gets right to the heart of the organization and leadership issues needed for successful ministry. It is also an excellent reference for avoiding and resolving problems that may occur as people get to know one another. 5 stars (Help for all phases of small group life.) - Whether you have led small groups for years or you are just starting out, you will find practical advice in this great resource. The text is easy to follow and can easily be used by small group leaders as they "group" together to learn to lead. Most of the Church is now focussed on relational evangelism. What better way to cultivate a personal relationship than in the small group. The group offers the opportunity to really know each other. Once strong relationships are in place, people begin to grow, multiplication takes place, and lives are changed. If this is what you want to accomplish you will find easy to understand technique in Leading a Life Changing Small Group. 4 stars (proven, practical tips for leading small groups) - Written by the director of adult education and leadership training at Willow Creek Community Church, this book is the result of experience rather than theory. Although the Willow Creek small group model is more structured than many leaders will feel comfortable with, the issues raised and the resources supplied will be helpful to anyone involved with small group leadership. The very title stresses the underlying principle: changing lives ...

Devotional Classics- Revised Edition - Selected Readings for Individuals and Groups

4 stars (Our Legacy) - "Devotional Classics" is the companion volume to Foster's "Spiritual Classics." Foster and Smith designed it as weekly devotional guide to 52 classic historical authors on the devotional life. They catalog their readings using the Renovare conceptualization of six strands in historical spirituality: the prayer-filled life, the virtuous life, the Spirit-empowered life, the compassionate life, the word-centered life, and the sacramental life. These six categories along with their 52 representative authors combined with the introductions by Foster and Smith, offer readers a fine introduction to Christian devotional thinking. As with "Spiritual Classics," the snippets are at times hard to fully digest out of the context of their original writings. Hopefully, readers will be motivated to read many of the 52 author's full works. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Beyond the Suffering: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." 5 stars (Eye Opening) - I've always considered myself a student of theology and spritually deep, until I read the readings in Devotional Classics. This book opened my eyes to a whole new world of Christian devotion. The book is an excellent compilation of some of history's greatest Christians and their experiences with God, not merely their doctrinal beliefs. Richard Foster's comments are also very insightful. I highly recommend this book and always have several copies on hand to give away. 5 stars (Portal to the 'Old Book' - Wisdom From Those who Got It) - In the introduction Foster cites CS Lewis' recommendation for reading one 'old book' for every new book one reads. 'Old books' can speak with voices outside of the biases of our time and document the inter-generational story of Christ and his Church. Classics that have been beneficial for centuries are more likely to be beneficial than the latest glossy at the local b...

Dog Training- Fly Fishing- And Sharing Christ In The 21st Century Empowering Your Church To Build Co

1 stars (Bait and Switch) - Despite this book's title, the author provides no useful information regarding the art of angling with flies, and readers seeking advice on fishing the waters of Colorado, where the author lives, should look elsewhere. 5 stars (Excellent, insightful, and thought-provoking.) - This book blows the doors off of mainstream accepted taboos in our culture. After personally experiencing the highs and lows of traditional cell-based groups, I was at a point of wondering why change was not being made in churches. Then, I came across this book. In it, Ted delightfully shows how a church can face change and come out of it truly blessed. Thanks so much for sharing your results, and your honesty! We are all blessed, because of it. I exhort other churches to openly test their waters and see if this book and what it presents can be applied in their congregations. And... as we all know... this book, and the concepts it speaks of... will evolve as they continue to understand the power of God more fully in their midst. 5 stars (Everyone trying to do Small Group ministry should read this.) - It's refreshing, insightful, and helpful. I especially appreciated Ted's advice about not just overlaying some other church's small group ministry onto your church, but rather praying, wrestling, and struggling with what God wants at your church. What he's saying make a lot of sense, especially in our American free enterprise culture. ...

It-s Not About the Bike- My Journey Back to Life

5 stars (An Inspirational Story and Individual!) - The book covers Lance Armstrong's life - from birth, to his first bike, initial cycling successes, cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, returning to cycling to win the Tour de France, and becoming a first-time father. The book is hard to put down, and well-worth reading. Lance's mother was only 17 when he was born, played a very large role in his development, and continues to be very close to him. His father left before Lance reached his second birthday, and she worked two jobs while finishing school and raising Lance. She taught Lance never to quit. Lance got his first bike at age seven, and loved it. In high-school he tried football (not coordinated enough), then swimming (the 12-year-old was initially put in with 7-year-olds) and soon became quite good. At age thirteen Lance entered and won his first jr. triathalon, followed by another in Houston, and by age 15 was entering adult competitions, going from 15th place the first year to 5th the second. Lance began earning $20,000/year as a competitor, and then ended up winning the World Championship in Norway. Before this happened, however, Lance had to learn racing tactics (eg. saving himself until close to the end), and as often as not became too eager and faded before the finish. Then came cancer - described by Lance as the "best thing that happened to me." Early symptoms were attributed to "bicycle injury," or "flu." However, after coughing up blood, Lance sought help - eventually resulting in the diagnosis of advanced testicular cancer which had spread to the lungs (12 locations) and his brain (2 locations). Initial testical removal and chemotherapy took place in Austin, with little adverse impact. Getting a second opinion took him to Houston, and a third in Indianapolis, where brain surgery and much more aggressive chemotherapy were undertaken. Lance not only lost all his hair, but also ended up with prolonged daily retching. Along the way, Lance ...

Into Thin Air - A Personal Account of the Mt Everest Disaster

5 stars (Into Thin Air) - Great book! Kept me on the edge of my seat. Well written, easy to read. 5 stars (Best book I have ever read!) - This is a great book. Hard to put down. It is written well and holds your attention on every page. I have read alot of books and this is my all time favorite. 5 stars (Gripping and informative) - This book is a 'one day read.' It literally proves that survival of the fittest rules the day. By accounting the lack of emotion in helping others and the illogic visions of people who do attempt extreme feats (and defeats), the author shows exactly how elements of OCD do lead people in pursuing maybe visions that humans should not really venture down. It's gripping, a hard lesson and fantastically written....especially so soon after the author had such a traumatic series of events. A total must-read and seriously, start reading this book knowing that whatever plans you had that day will be cancelled once you open this book! ...
