5 stars (The Real Deal) - Imagine if Jesus Christ personally told you what the gospels meant -- told you what the holy ghost was (and how you could actually "receive" it). Imagine if he explained his parables to you, took all the mystery and confusion out. Imagine if he explained heaven and hell in a way that actually made sense to you! Imagine if he talked to you in a way that you could feel a connection to him, the way you did when you were a kid maybe. Imagine if the things he told you not only made you feel good like that, but they were also totally logical, so you didn't have to choose between your religion and the teachings of modern science. Imagine if religion and science turned out to be one and the same thing. Can't imagine it, can you? I know I couldn't. But do yourself a favor anyway. Read the book. 5 stars (A thousand billion stars for this one) - This is quite simply one of the most marvelous, engaging, and educational books I've ever read. One paragraph from this book contains more wisdom than you're likely to encounter in months or years of ordinary study. Weeks, months, years of life go by and rarely, if ever, are we so blessed to have a volume of this magnitude appear. The educational value of this work is inestimable. Blessed are we who have the opportunity to read and study this book. This is a work for the ages - buy it! 5 stars (The Second Coming of Christ Within You) - This 2 volume hardbound set is beautifully bound and a joy to use. The extensive footnotes are at least as interesting as the text and contribute to appreciating Yogananda's revealed interpretation of biblical and apocryphal texts supplemented and supported by Buddhist, Moslem and Hindu texts and his own revelatory understanding of the universalist Christ consciousness and its meaning to the world. This is a book to heal the damage done to the Christian message (and to the hearts of those seaching for God's love) done by "churchlogy". I find myself more... 5 stars (Wonderful Analysis of Porcupine's Dilemma and Relationships) - In this classic book the author Ortberg zooms on the things that make community tick. He elaborates in the chapter `Porcupine's Dilemma' "Community is the place God made us for. Community is the place where God meets us. Here is the rub : How to get close without getting hurt? How do you pursue this beautiful dream of community with actual, real-life people? Weird, not-normal, as-is, dysfunctional real life people? Your friends, colleagues, your children, your parents? Can it really happen? The Hebrew prophets had a word for connectedness of all things : shalom - the webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight. The connectedness has also been called `reciprocal rootedness'. The North American Common Porcupine is a member of the rodent family that has around 30,000 quills attached to his body. Each quill can be driven into an enemy, and the enemy's body heat will cause the microscopic barb to expand and become more firmly embedded. The wounds can fester; the more dangerous ones, affecting vital organs, can be fatal. Ortberg analyzes the Porcupine's Dilemma : How do you get close without getting hurt? This is our dilemma too. Every one carries our own little arsenal. Our barbs have names like rejection, condemnation, resentment, arrogance, selfishness, envy, contempt. Some people hide them better then others, but get close enough and you will find out they are there. We, too, learn to survive through a combination of withdrawal and attack. We, too, find ourselves hurting (and being hurt by) those we long to be closest to. We try to figure out how to get close without getting hurt. We wonder if there is not a softer, less-barbed creature out there - a mink or an otter, perhaps. We can usually think of a number of particularly prickly porcupines in our lives. But the problem is not just them. I am somebody's porcupine. S... 4 stars (Max McLean's Performance) - I purchased this package 3 years ago and have noticed the price increase since. I was considering a repeat purchase as a gift and noticed Mr. McLean's new recording for the ESV translation. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/193104743X/ref=cm_aya_asin.title/104-1927007-5627968?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance I ended up buying this and also the ESV recording. Without elaborating the NIV and ESV translation standards, both products deliver in their unique ways... NIV recording - More dramatization. ESV recording - Background music is extremely subtle and not intrusive at all. Even my sibling who prefer an all voice recording found it delightful and very acceptable. Both recordings do not have that FM (mono) radio quality broadcast sound noticeable in other audio bible products from various vendors. Blessings. 5 stars (Speedy, inexpensive) - This order was fast, and the least expensive. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. 5 stars (Exactly as Advertised) - The readings of the Bible, New International Version, by Max McLean are a tremendous benefit as I try to work additional Bible study into my busy schedule. I listen to the readings primarily while exercising in the morning either before or after my Bible reading time. It enhances my understanding by offering pronunciation clues to some of the hard-to-pronounce names and places in the Bible while providing a different reading interpretation. I would highly recommend this product to anyone hoping to spend more time in The Word. ...
