4 stars (Dance Dance Revolution: More addictive than Pac-man) - I just bought this game Yesterday evening after yearning for this for about 6 months. Better than what I percieved it to be like in other people's reviews. The story mode is pretty fun your first way through it on Easy mode and The story is pretty cool except some of it makes no sense, like there is a part when mario is jumping on a flower and some how it magically blooms and bounces mario up on top of a mountain and later in the story Mario has to go back up there and he has to jump on a flag to some how magically appear there when he could of just hopped on the friggin flower. Well anyways this game comes in a box bigger than the one the gamecube comes in so that might scare you from purchasing it in a store because you may think you have to buy a Gamecube with it but you really don't. The box is so big because the Dance Pad is fairly large. When I went to go buy this at Wal*mart the clerks thought it was a gamecube and were wondering why it was so light. LOL! The songs on this game kicks ass. There is a huge bundle of remixed mario songs, some dance songs from 3rd party groups, and atleaste one from other Nintendo games.(Original Donkey Kong Theme Remix) The "Work Out Mode" if you heard about it isn't really a mini-game were you work out. it just changes the option of your weight and tells you how much colories you've burnt throughout your plays through this game. I think the Dance pad is kind of cheap. I worry that I might break it when I wear shoes so I always wear socks or go barefoot while playing, the bottom is white and some how dirt gets attracted to it, the plasticy material that covers the top of the pad wrinkles up if you drag it and sometimes you will move out of place on the mat while your playing and really screw up. Other than those few problems I'm satisfied with my $53.00 purchase of this game and I've lost about 5 lbs so far playing it non-stop (almost). 4 stars (Fun For The Whole... 5 stars ("Enhanced Humans": Never Sleep and They Have Artificial Vision.) - Nanotechnology, communication technology, information technology, robotics, drugs, biology, and genetics all come together in this new book. I had a quick read and heard the author talk at some length on the radio about the book and the subject. From the book and from listening to the author, one is convinced that this is a solid effort. The book gives an overview of new technologies and drugs. The drugs are not your normal medications. They do things such as extend memory. The technologies can give us things such as artificial hearing and artificial sight. He describes how we can use electronic sensors in the brain to control robotics to help the handicapped move limbs. In the past we might have thought that some of these drugs and technologies would be radical, or far off in the distant future, but now many of the technologies are here. The author is an editor and a reporter at the Washington Post. He has published a number of articles and books including Edge City: Life on the New Frontier and The Nine Nations of North America. The book is entertaining, and the story and writing are probably better than if written by a scientist. In his radio interview, he said that he had travelled extensively to prepare for the book, absorbing new ideas and technologies being tested by drug companies, various universities, government agencies, and in other private industry. According to the author, the products of that research are here or are coming soon. Part of his challenge was to write a book that brings the reader up to date without sounding too crazy, or too techie, or too far out. If he just presents a lot of "gee whiz" chit chat, the reader will be turned off. After all, he is a Post writer, not a hack gadget salesman. So, he has attempted to explain the social impact as he goes through the book. Also, he does not want to give the impression that it is science fiction that we have here. It i... 2 stars (Genetics: From Genes to Genomes) - I found this book extremely verbose and unorganized. It would serve as a great reference book for a lab researcher or grad student. But it's way too technical and dense for an introductory genetics class. The authors do a poor job presenting the material in a comprehensible way to an undergraduate genetics student. Not recommended. 5 stars (Great general Genetics textbook) - I think this is a great text book for General Genetics class! In fact, this is the text we have been using at UC Berkeley. The authors are not only clear & concise in delivering their topics, but also able to formulate challenging questions to test students' undestanding. 5 stars (Glad to have it!) - This is a very well-written book, providing a modern coverage of an important area in biology, namely genetics. The novel aspect of the book is its new and molecular biology approach. Thus, modern genomic advances can be brought into bear on genetics. Yes, of course, the system biology approach has been exposed in this very cutting edge book. You should love to have a copy of it and learn the wisdom from some of the most well-known experts in Seattle. ... 5 stars (I used this book for my lectures.) - OK, let me put it simply. I used this book to prepare for my lectures to 2nd year medical undergraduates- and I received outstanding feedback. The students just loved it! 4 stars (A descent book for beginners) - Before making any critics about this book I should stress upon the fact that the authors well deserve a four star rating for this most readable book, both for the writing style and for the contents. Almost everything written is clear, concise and well presented. The captions are of high quality and if you ever buy this book feel sure that you are not wasting your money! I am referring in particular to chapter 16: Genetics of Bacteria and Bacteriophages which in reality is quite tricky but here presented with simple words. You may not have to read it more than once for you will understand it right from the first lecture. For in-depth study though you might need something more advanced! However I did not really appreciate the way the fluctuation test of S.Luria and M.Delbruk was presented nor was the following work of J.Cairns and B.Hall in chapter 14: Gene mutation, DNA repair and Transposable elements. There seems to lack the true essence of it. Furthermore the existence of mutational hotspots is limited to a subsection only of chapter 14 and a few lines on the work of S.Benzer. Even B.Lewin in Genes VII gives a better treatment of mutational hotspots. Finally I would have expected a chapter on Mutations to talk about mutator mutations as possible ways to increase or decrease the spontaneous mutation rate but no such references were made. Despite these few things, if you love genetics or need an introductory course be sure that this book is meant for you! 5 stars (I was taught by the proffesor who wrote the book) - Yup, and the professor gave out many problems in addition to supplementary problems. The book was an easy read but in order to do well in this course you simply need a mind for genetics. ... 5 stars (Makes evolutionary biology interesting) - Evolutionary biology can be extremely tedious for undergraduate students if one insists on teaching the more arcane debates as Fisher versus Shifting Balance. That might be good for a second course for future professionals, but if one starts with such stuff, students will lose all the interest in evolution they came with. Evolutionary Analysis is interesting, wel-informed and up to date, and is meant for general biologists. It cannot be used as a reference book for neo-darwinian debates, so the better. 1 stars (horrible) - Bought this one for Evolution class. It is a horrible excuse for a textbook. Do not buy this book unless it is for a middle school student. If the authors think this book has been written for an advanced audience, then I would suggest that anyone interested in learning evolution not attend University of Washington. 4 stars (Captives of the paradigm) - Although not a student in a course, I found perusing this (upgraded, new edition)text to be interesting and intriguing, despite being a severe Darwin critic. Well illustrated with clear expositions of technical pop gen. However, if Little Red Riding Hood were an Amazon reviewer the text would read, 'What nice teeth you have...". Sociobiological thinkings is now being mainstreamed. One of the puzzles of modern culture is the obtuseness of the technical elite, especially Darwinists. From whence did they get their rigid mentality, and total inability to think critically on evolution? It's no mystery if you look at the textbooks used to train these elites, as here. These are the doctors, biologists and others who, for the trouble of taking a close look at evolutionary theory, will end with the false assumptions of the Synthesis engraved on their eductional memory modules. The issue can be insidious with the study of population genetics, nicely done here in its own way. But it is a subject where technical math deludes people into thinking it constitute... 2 stars (refund) - I was very disappointed to get an e-mail telling me that the book was out of stock and I would get a refund. My daughter needed it for a class. I ended up having to buy it at her bookstore at full price! OUCH!!!!!! 5 stars ( The Developing Person Through the Life Span ) - Book was exactly as described and delivered on time. 2 stars (Disorganized and Dry...) - I am a student studying psychology, and I have read other psych textbooks. This book is almost impossible for me to read. There's so much going on in the margins of every page that it's distracting and confusing at times. It's chock-full of useless and overly-complicated vocabulary that does little to increase the understanding of the ideas presented, rather it separates the reader from the information because it's overly abstract and dry. I am taking this class online and without an instructor to solidify the concepts covered, I can only hope that enough exposure to this strange and seemingly unorganized text will facilitate my understanding of the material. ... 5 stars (Success with "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue) - After two years of listening to my friends rave about diminishing the pain from sports injuries with the Egoscue exercises, I finally purchased my own copy. I was amazed at how easy the exercises are, and neck and shoulder pain I had for years diminished after only 10 days. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a drug free way to conquer pain. 5 stars (Really Works -- say goodbye to chronic pain) - Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time, 10 to 90 min depending on your problem, but the results are amazing. Everyone I've convinced to actually sit down and do E-cises for their chronic pain problem has experienced noticable improvement after just one session: weak knees, aching wrists, sore ancles, stiff neck & shoulders, headaches, and more. If you have any sort of nagging discomfort, even a minor one, give "Pain Free" a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised! Egoscue also has a radio program Saturday mornings in Colorado, which is how I first heard of this book, and clinics where you can get a personalized E-cise plan. 5 stars (Amazing Book, it really works!) - The book is amazing. I have a really bad back from working jobs standing on my feet all day. Someone told me about this book at work and I now do the exercises daily. The exercises require no stretching, 30-40 minutes only. The exercises use gravity to pull your body back into it's functional state. Using the book is like going to a chiropractor every day, only it does not cost several hundred dollars. Dr. Pete Egoscue is truly an amazing human being for sharing his knowledge. Once you read the book and use the exercises it will make total sense! The body is meant to move and be active, not to sit down all day due... 3 stars (Thorough and confusing) - I am not sure why I didn't like this book. It just seemed to have so many names about who did what that I couldn't keep all the information straight. It's like reading a novel with way too many characters. I haven't retained much of the information in the book, and am still a little confused about the difference between Sunnis and Shiites. He did make Sufism quite clear though. I think I will have to do more reading on the subject to make the facts stick. 3 stars (Almost a great book) - While this was often an engrossing read, I left reading it feeling slightly dissapointed. While I will echo other reviewers in stating that the author is a very gifted writer, his skills in history, political science, and anthropology are weaker. Weaknesses: His history loses it's chronological thread rather often. Given the convoluted history of the subject, this is perhaps understandable, but far too often he resorts to "as we shall see in the next chapter", which strikes me as the mistake of an immature historian - particularly as the thread often doesn't get taken up into well into the aforesaid chapter! His final thesis, that Islamic democracy is both necessary and inevitable, given the teachings of the Prophet, is weakly presented, especially as he notes how difficult it is to counter fundamentalisms of any religon. Finally, I think perhaps the scope of the book is over-broad. I found myself hoping that the author will re-write this book in 15-20 years, as the Oxford Dons of old would do with their signature works, in light of what I have no doubt will be his advancing skills and scholarship. The best of this book is very, very good indeed. It's especially strong at putting the Prophet and his ministry in a historical and social context. It is similarly strong on the process of exegesis that lead to Hadith and Sharia that run counter to his teachings. And his contention that the upheaval we are witnessing in the Islamic world is analgous t... 5 stars (Always the points counterpoint) - Jim Morrow has returned after a few years without a book on the shelves to bring us his prose in short form; an area in which his ideas excel and don't feel rushed or squashed. In " The Second Coming of Charles Darwin " we meet a automatonic galapogos tortoise who is sent back in time with a vengeant man wanting to right the moral wrings of the future by preventing what he feels is the root of all moral wrongs, the theory of evolution. A fantastic short story sewn together with Jim's always welcome satire. He continually birngs his readers a great story, even if you agree with his pathos or not, Jim is one of the most underrated writers of our day. ...
