3 stars (Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy) - The book was received in a timely basis. The book was in adequate shape. However almost every word in the book was underlined with several different colors of markers. I have never received a book with so much marker wear. I would not have purchased it if I had known how used it was. I do not remember what the condition was listed as being for this book. Therefore I cannot blame my purchase on the seller. 1 stars (Disappointed) - In ordering the PACKAGE for Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy by Gerald Corey, I entered the ISBN # for the PACKAGE. I had declined several options for the HARDCOVER ONLY because I wanted the PACKAGE including the Student Manual. I received the shipment in a fairly timely manner. HOWEVER, I was only sent the HARDCOVER! I paid $10 more than I could have gotten that single book for locally right across the street from my college! I ended up having to order the manual separately from another seller. I was unable to contact seller because name given did not match what was on the shipment. My serenity is worth more than a $10 fight! I would not use this seller again. 5 stars (Excellent source for the discovery of underlying issues in life) - If anyone thinks that this book concern only to students in the counseling field i shall tell: you are mistakenly wrong. This book really helps bringing out hidden realities of our lives that we do not get used to accept. In my own particular case it made me faced some realities that had deep roots years back, to say my childhood. This is worth the hundred dollars. Do not hesitate buying it. If you do not like any of the philosophical points of any given theory you will probably like the other one of the next chapter and so on......The chapter describing the life cycle is extra excellent...well the hell incredible.....the best you know which cycle you are in the better prepared for future stages in life the bett... 4 stars (Good data but needs more specific examples) - I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book. Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above. 5 stars (This book is the... 4 stars (cells over systems) - I'm a biopsychologist. Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting. I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed. Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date. It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively). Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis. 4 stars (as for textbooks.....) - as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus. this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap. the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this! 4 stars (Great textbook!) - I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ... 5 stars (Emergence of a true science) - Reading this textbook one can appreciate the science in the science of human behavior. Not that the science of human behavior isn't well-served by the philosophy of behaviorism or by ongoing research within the area of the experimental analysis of behavior. But what I saw in this book is just how much progress has been made in applications and how fully the scientific method has been utilized. " Applied Behavior Analysis " is well organized both as chapters and within chapters, so I was able to absorb the material in small chunks. There is an excellent summary presented as a numbered list (with subject headings) at the end of each chapter. Coverage seems thorough. As an introductory text, the whole kitchen sink has not been included but at 600 pages, plenty has been included. As fitting for an introduction, there are many fine definitions. In addition to the subject index and name index, a 3-page key term index is provided. Since I find myself getting confused at times by some usages of basic terms such as "contingency", "establishing operation" and "stimulus control", the care in defintion in this textbook was helpful. Only one section of the book wasn't of immediate interest to me: the use of graphs and baseline design in Part 3 (Evaluation and Analysis of Behavior Change). I simply read the summaries of each chapter for that part, but had no trouble following all the other parts despite skipping over the Part 3 material. Many parts such as Stimulus Control, Self Management, and a succint presentation of Schedules of Reinforcement were stimulating to read. In the midst of the book, I felt the excitement of realizing how well this field is advancing. Discussion of ethics and a concern for clients' rights are spread in several places in the book, e.g. in the sections on time out and punishment. More, perhaps collected into a chapter of its own, wouldn't have hurt. A "doctrine of least restrictive alternative" is advised... Unfortunately, it doesn't (or can't possibly) act as a substitute for the program. The training itself is based heavily on experiential learning that can't be delivered in a book. The book is useful as a reference, especially for those fortunate enough to have gone through the CTI program, and also for those thinking about signing up for the program. It might be difficult to use the model or some of the tools without the patience to figure out the jargon, but none the less, there is valuable information. One example is the "powerful questions" reference section that will benefit anyone trying to coach effectively. 4 stars (Good start or refresher course) - This book is an excellently written basics course on coaching. It focus' each of us on the tasks we know are important but sometimes neglect the subtle nature of doing it effectively. For example, listening, intuition, or what level of candor is appropriate. 5 stars ( Boundaries ) - This is the most life-changing book I have ever read (second the Bible)! I think every high school graduate should be required to read it! The authors describe in great detail what boundaries are, and who needs them. I experience a lot of guilt when I want to say no to someone's request. I feel that I am letting them down, no matter what the request is. The authors use scripture to help you determine what are appropriate things to say no to, and why you should not feel guilty. Even Jesus, the most giving person who ever lived, had boundaries! This book does not give excuses to get out of your responsibilities, but helps you to see what are unhealthy situations to avoid, and how to get out of them. It even gives some examples for parenting so you children will learn boundaries. I am grateful to have read this book, and find myself re-reading it often. 4 stars (inspiring) - I haven't completed the entire book as of yet but what I have read is very helpful and inspiring. For anyone who lacks confidence, this book is a God send. 5 stars (Extraordinary!) - The principles in Boundaries have revolutionalized my life. Well worth the time and money. 3 stars (student manual for theory & practice of group counseling) - very pleased with the quick service. The book was in very good condition 5 stars (A fantastic text. Full of information, easy to understand.) - I was fortunate enough to take my group counseling class from Dr. Corey himself at Cal State Fullerton. The experience of learning from and being coached by Dr. Corey was amazing, and allowed even further insight into this text. The formula of the book is easy to follow. Individual theories are covered as well as lessons on the group process itself. A must read for anyone training to be a counselor! 5 stars (Excellant Group Counseling Book) - I am using this book in a graduate level group counseling class. I have found it to be very useful. 5 stars (Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory & Practice) - Sue & Sue have revised their book with wonderful results. This time they include a section "Clinical Implications" in each chapter, this adds to the information and helps with the teaching of this necessary subject. As usual Sue & Sue are thorough and thoughtful in their presentation. They also include the notion of Organizational Culture as a needed subject of study. I highly recommend this book for any clinican and professor who works in the field of psychology. Dr. Gabrielle M. Guedet, Ph.D., MFT 4 stars (Good Book, some problems with it.) - This was required reading for a class I was taking in multicultural issues. It was very interesting but it was hard to read parts of it because of the nature of confronting our biases that the book addresses. I did have some issues with the way the book approached discussing the role of white people in society. It was almost as if the authors wanted me to feel bad about being white. Overall it was very informative and gave really good examples and implications for clinical use. 1 stars (A Biased Look at Bias in America) - I must add my disappointment to many others who have already posted here. This book is required reading in my masters in counseling course, and I was hoping for something that would provide valuable guidelines to reach across cultures in counseling. Unfortunately, Sue & Sue make it quite clear that the only reaching across cultures to be done is by White Americans. Whites are painted as being responsible for all bias in our country while non-Whites are to be held responsible for nothing. Period. Just because these two authors (or any authors, for that matter) are considered the experts in their field does not mean they are necessarily correct. It is impossible for any human being to approach any subject without bias, yet overall Sue & Sue hold only Whites accountable for recognizing and correcting their biases. At the same time... 5 stars (The difference between a bartender and a counselor!) - This book is an excellent resource for the beginning counseling student; a wonderful introduction to the concept of the "intentional interview." This text will aid in mastering basic listening and influencing skills, as well as illustrate how to conduct a full interview using only listening skills. The authors break down the interviewing process into an easy to understand format, complete with case study illustrations. This book is not only a superb introduction to the intentional interview, it can also serve as a resource for those who are interested in honing their microskills. After all, this is what marks the difference between a bartender and a counselor! 5 stars (Novice) - For a Master's level clinical skills course I was required to read this text. While I initially thought it was more expensive than I wanted to pay for a textbook, I was pleasantly surpised that it was well worth the price. Not only did I learn skills, that I thought I had already mastered (a little cocky uh?) but I learned skills I didn't possess. I have since graduated and am working in the field, yet I still find it a useful resource and as a reminder not to get too cocky because one always can use REMINDERS about how to do something well! 4 stars (Intentional Interviewing and Counseling : Facilitating Clien) - The book was easy to understand and follow. I recommend the text to anyone that is involved in the counseling profession, teaching, and/or has contact with the public. The text teaches the basic techniques of listening and attending behaviors. 4 stars ( Life-Span Human Development ) - I found the layout of this book very interesting in that it took a portion of the life-span and brought you from infancy to old age. In this way, the natural progression of life could be viewed for each topic. The alternative would be to start with infancy, then go to childhood, adolescence, etc. With the approach of this book, I found tracking each topie, e.g., "Perception," more interesting. 3 stars (Tired Read) - Very dry read. Complicated and confusing order of addressing topics. Reading for my developmental psych class felt like a chore with this book. 2 stars (Choppy, and incredibly dry) - I used this book with a human development course at my university, and it was less than adequate for the job. The book is incredibly bland, and while it goes through the life span in order, it seems to jump around from different people's theories too much. Better if all of Piaget's ideas were presented together for a certain topic, etc.. On top of that, I believe that the method of citing the sources, while it works for research papers, seemed out of place in this setting. Numbered footnotes would have worked better. The method of citation used made it seem choppy, as all of a sudden you'd see a last name and a year in the middle of the text. This could be done more effectively, because the current method definitely broke up the text significantly. Hopefully, some of these changes will be implemented in a future edition. ... 5 stars (A great book) - A great book with a practical approach to a sensitive area for all men. 5 stars (Great tool to overcome sexual temptation) - This is an incredible book. It totally helped me to overcome my struggles with pornography and sexual temptation in general. It gives the reader tools to fight the battle. I'd highly recommend it. It's changed my life and the lives of others I know. If you struggle at all in this area, it's the book for you. 2 stars (Agreed) - Hello, my name is Michael Campbell, and having used this book in a study group I agree that it is totally a mixed bag. I feel her review is right on, and dont really have that much to add to it. Luckily it was a quick read (each of the 6 sections takes only 20 or 30 minutes to read) and so I dont feel I wasted a lot of time on it. If you struggle with sexual purity then this is for you. 5 stars (Life changing principles that lead to a true legacy) - This book really captures the essense of a successful mentoring relationship. Anyone who leads, coaches, manages or influences others should read this book - a few times. The principles have literally changed my life and have given me the understanding and confidence to now help others. After all, the legacy any of us can hope to leave can only be measured in the lives of other people. 5 stars (Fantastic insight into relationships) - This book is so applicable because it truly does go to the heart of mentoring which is investing in others at the same time you are being given back in return. This book could even be called, the heart of ALL relationships. I like what the back says "The secret to living....is giving". It truly is the secret and has completely changed the way I approach business as well as personal relationships. 5 stars (WOW!) - this book has truly changed my life as I have applied it not only to myself, but also to all of the other relationships in my life (spouse, co-workers, children, friends, relatives, etc.). 2 stars (Skip the profanity) - A fairly good text, it probably covers the field better than other available sources. However, the selection of illustrations seem to be chosen based on how much profanity they can include. I realize that crisis situations involve people who don't monitor their usage, but why include every F--- and other curse word when they aren't needed to convey the meaning. I teach large classes and probably won't adopt this title because of the gratuitous inclusion of verbal static. 5 stars (An invaluable tool in the field of mental health.) - Gilliland and James have successfully created an extremely comprehensive introduction to crisis intervention methodology in this text. While lacking some historical perspective on the development of this methodology, the book incorporates a variety tools useful to the mental health professional. These tools well make up for the exclusion of a short history on crisis intervention. The authors clearly defined various helping situations (i.e., suicide, sexual assault, spousal abuse, and chemical dependency) and demonstrated how their applications assisted in the resolution of these issues. Furthermore, Gilliland and James added the sections on extreme circumstances, such as hostage taking, as well as professional concerns, such as burnout. For those entering the field, this text provides a wealth of information. Those that are well seasoned will still find this a useful reference. On first glance, I was surprised to find this text so easily read, particularly when dealing with such a serious subject, yet I have returned to it time and again in my own practice for ideas and direction. 5 stars (A Godsend) - I was desperate for information to prepare for my licensure exam. This book was extremely thorough, accurate and incredibly helpful. I had gathered numerous books and notes to study from, but most of what I needed was right in this book. I recommend it to anyone studying for psychology, counseling, social work, or other related licensure/certifying examinations. 5 stars (Study for NCE) - This is an easy to use, easy to understand tool to help you do your best on the NCE test. You really need the CD's " Vital Information and Review Questions for the NCE and State Counseling Exams" to use along with this book, to get the maximum benefit. It seems expensive, but you need to consider how much your counseling license is worth to you. 5 stars (All you need is this book and a couple months...) - This was the ONLY book I studied for the NCE. I did not dig up my notes, and I did not reference other texts. I read it cover to cover twice, marking the questions I did not guess right the first time and returning to them until I could get them right. The best part is the explanations. There were actually a couple of questions in the book that the author got wrong or that were disputable. On the whole, however, this book is all you will need to study and pass. 3 stars (Family Therapy An (Humdrum) Overview) - This text is very dry reading. As a student, I had to force myself to read by promising myself rewards every ten pages (yes! I can go get a drink! Then ten more pages and then yes! I can call my mom!) And I am interested in the subject, and love to read. The information is good, detailed, etc. but the method is dry. In comparison, my counseling theories text was easy to read, informative, and interesting, and it didn't take self positive reinforcing to get me to read the whole thing. 5 stars (Fantastic Introduction to Family Therapy) - As a student of Family Therapy I am keenly aware of the need to have first-class resources that utilize proven techniques and that are theoretically sound. This text by the Goldenberg's, I have been told, is a veritable classic. I can see why. The book is very logical in its layout and construction, with the authors eschewing jargon and therapy-speak for clear, lucid, and cogent language. I have come to learn that there is a world of difference between individual therapy, and family therapy. The Goldenberg's make sure that this vital distinction is clear to the reader, and they do so without pedantry. I would recommend this book as a resource or as the primary text for any graduate level family therapy course. This book is so comprehensive that it can stand alone, or be used to supplement your studies. 4 stars (A classic text for intoduction to family therapy) - This is one of the oldest and most classic family therapy text. Many experienced counselors have benefited from previous editions of the book. I read it several years ago, and I am also the co-translator of the Chinese edition of this book (4th ed.). It took us a LOT of time in the translation process. Because the language is full of jargons and the sentences are very long. It's a bit difficult for non-English speaking people.
