5 stars (A MUST Read) - Having read more than a dozen books on the subject of mission statements, goal setting and time management, and also having taught workshops on the subject myself, this is the one book that I find most useful. As some other reviewers point out, it may seem a little heavy in parts, but the details are well worth studying. As the authors emphasize, time management doesn't begin with managing time, it begins with finding our own individual purpose, establishing our mission, and setting our goals to achieve that mission. This is more than a "how to" book. It is a "why to" book. It has the ability to persuade people that they need to set written goals. In teaching young adults, I have found some that insist they don't need written goals and that they certainly don't need a mission statement. My response is to encourage them to read this book. I appreciate how persausive the authors are in encouraging the reader to find the "main thing" without getting trapped into becoming a success in just one small area rather than fulfilling four areas of the "quadrant," including physical, social, mental and spiritual. Moreover, they bring home the necessity of finding balance and staying balanced in the different roles we have in our lives. After you read this book, I recommend that you consider reading "The Power of Full Engagement" by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, and "Finding Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. You won't be disappointed. 5 stars (A Revolutionary Resource!) - As someone who juggles many different responsibilities and a crowded calendar, I approached this title with high expectations. I was not disappointed! Covey here offers a revolutionary resource for time management. Rather than following the standard theme of how to do more in a given period of time, the author emphasizes the importance of setting priorities and planning ahead. His analogy of the clock and the compass is priceless in describing the two elements that shou... 5 stars (Breakthrough Book!) - I purchased this book for my teenager before sending her off to college as a freshman. She doesn't like to read, and basically dislikes books, so I was hoping she would at least skim through it and pick up some of the principles in this book. To my surprise she started reading it and never put it down! I have not read the book, but there must be something very practical and relevant in this book if it grabbed my 18 year old daughters attention! She thought it was great! 1 stars (Condescending Fluff) - It's appalling to me that this book has such a high rating as of today. I received this book from a relative when I was 14, and its condescending tone combined with the fact that it tries too hard to be "hip" effectively turned me off to it. Had I receieved "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" I may have read it. Five years later and after reading some glowing amazon.com reviews, I decided to give it a fair shot. Unfortunately, my initial impression was dead-on. This book is filled to the brim with vague fluff and moralistic, cliches. Despite that the book is marketed as written "by a teen for teens," Covey writes in a heavy-handed, righteous manner comparable to an authoritarian parent. Covey bludgeons the reader with anti-sex, anti-smoking, anti-anything-the-masses-think-is-bad propaganda. He neither cautions in an objective manner, nor enlightens. Instead, he appeals to vanity, which we know teenagers are full of (*cough*HYPOCRITE*cough*). In his diatribe against smoking, he mentions TERRIBLE side effects like *gasp* bad breath and... YELLOW FINGERTIPS! Let's not forget-- teenagers think they're invincible! They would NEVER take heed if we warned them that smoking causes CANCER AND DEATH. And therein lies the problem with the premise of the whole book: It doesn't give enough credit to the teen population as a whole. It presupposes that most teens are ignorant about life. NEWSFLASH: Time does NOT equal wisdom. S... 5 stars (It has help) - This book is awesome. It has help me in many ways. The book has opened up my eyes and everything seems to be clear. I recommend this to everyone even if your not going through tough times. You can can see other people's expereince through this book. In somewhat ways everyone has expereince differently. 3 stars (Life Is Not a Bowl of Cherries.) - Most of us get all worked up about things which, upon closer examination, aren't really that big a deal. We focus on little problems and concerns and blow them out of proportion. One example is a minor problem in traffic when a stranger cuts in front and perhaps causes a near accident. We convince ourselves that we are justified in our anger. The other day, Jeff followed my directions to turn right, without looking to his left. A car was right up on him but, since no one was in the approaching lane, she was able to get over. Then she forced him off the road. I told him not to get out of the car as that was road rage. The woman gave him a good lecture, then cooled down when I said, "He's from Nashville. He didn't know where he was." Road rage and running through red lights are the things to do in this town. Do not worry about little things. Instead of "sweating the small stuff," take time to contemplate a solution. You'll have a lot more energy to be kinder and gentler. When your mind is clear and peaceful and your stress level is reduced, you'll have more fun. When your stress is small, it's manageable and easy to control. We all have high (optimistic about the future and grateful for the past)) and low, negative moods (life is never as bad as it seems at that time). In a low mood, you feel that your whole life is wrong. In a good mood, everything seems to go much better. Life is never fair. It should be, but it's not and it won't be someday. We determine our rate by not expecting fairness and feeling sorry for ourselves. It is our own challenge to overcome personal struggles. ... 4 stars (So far, so good) - I'm 26 years old and for the past 5 years, I have compromised myself for the sake of being in a relationship. I have decided that I do not want to do this anymore and recently began searching for reading material to help me (along with my Bible of course). Yesterday, when I saw this book, I felt compelled to buy it. I'm on page 43...and so far, so good. I must admit that it's made me blush a few times because the writings are so frank, but I appreciate Mrs. Ethridge's honesty especially since my parents we unable to counsel me in this manner. I would recommend that parents read it along with their children so that they can answer the many questions that will be asked...and of course, the many times that blushing will happen. Happy reading :o) 3 stars (This book was good.) - I read this book and I thought It was a good read. was actually kind of glad that it was so bold because a lot of people sugar coat words when we here them everyday in movies...etc. It was real and it addressed a lot of issues. it helps to only a certain extent though. I like the fact that it highlighted on the fact that sexual integrity is a four componenet collective. It deals with the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects as a whole to be completley pure. It showed that It was not just sexual abstinence but self control, thought control, and God's expectations. I couldn't totally relate to the book only because the guys that I go out with are truely living their lives as disciples of christ and have God on their mind. My mentality is that if this guy at school, or work..etc can't lead me spiritually and help me get to heaven, then he is not someone I will date. which rules out every guy except the ones at church. we double date and do things that glorify god and in the book she kind of pinned every guy as a sex addict or something and there are no christian guys trying to be sexually pure. I know different and that is why I gave it three stars. 5... 5 stars (A readers gift) - I purchased this audio cd & was completely taken away. I really loved the time travel it was a really important part of the story. There were some very poignent things said that I hope resonate with people. When he visited the area where goals & aspirations that didn't come to fruition, It moved me soo much that I said, anything that I set out to accomplish, i will. I don't want any of my goals to end up in an room where they never come to life. Overall, a very good audio book. I love audio cd's. 5 stars (Very Motivating!) - This is the best book ever about clutter! It gets you excited and motivated. You can't wait to clear out your life of clutter! I have shared it with several friends and family. Kingston is the best! 5 stars (The only book you'll need about space clearing) - I'm not one into "new age psychobabble" but Karen Kingston's advice in this book did alot for me ... and the dividends continue paying off to this day. I read this book at a down time in my life and, indeed, I never realized why I was holding onto old letters, graduation caps and gowns from schools that held nothing but bad memories for me, and magazines from nearly 10 years prior. I admit that I'm not as bad as other people but I cluttered up the little space that I had and I felt it. Once I started questioning why I was keeping stuff, I had the strength to let it go and not feel bad about it. I haven't looked back since. After re-reading this book, it strengthened my resolve to keep clutter out of my life as best I can. Her reasoning is based on common sense, really, not "real" Feng Shui: If your friends do nothing but drag you down, time to move on. If those letters from an old flame hold nothing but bad memories, what's the point in torturing yourself by keeping them? If you haven't worn that outfit yet, what makes you think you'll wear it sometime this year (even though you've been promising yourself you're going to lose weight to get back into those jeans for years)? Karen also gives advice on how to reduce the chance of re-introducing clutter into your life by questioning the purpose of every single piece of paper you have. Through reading her book, I have become conscientious of clearing out every so often and I find myself, indeed, questioning every paper that I intend to keep (and many papers hit the recycle bin because of that!). Same thing for clothes: If they don't fit, bundle them up and give them to people who can use them. Her book also enabled me to let ... 5 stars (Practical wisdom) - John Wooden succinctly explains the principles that he lives his life by. He interestingly weaves personal stories and practical wisdom together to make the lessons he wants to convey strong and memorable. In a culture that bases success on wins and losses, John Wooden offers a shocking alternative definition, simply that success is peace of mind which is a direct result of knowing that an athlete has done all he can to become their best. His incredible performance at UCLA shows that when executed meticulously, such a philosophy can produce wins, and more importantly, great role models. 5 stars (Incredible.) - This book was incredible. Every sentence rang with meaning, every word could be used to change the course of one's life toady. This book has had a tremendous impact on my life, and, now, I follow the book's advice, and 'make every day my own masterpiece'. John Wooden is not just an incredible coach, he can write an absolutely incredible book as well. A combination of 'Chicken Soup' and a philosophy book, this book now occupies the spot of honor on my shelf. Thank you so much, Mr. Wooden . 5 stars (Simply a Great Lesson from a Great man!) - This book is a must read for every parent, teacher, and coach. AND it should be a must read for every high school student and athlete. This should be at the top of every high school English teacher's required reading list for their students. It would certainly provide far more benefit than some of the "classics" they are now required to read. If more kids read this book at an early age, it would help them understand many values in life that unfortunately many don't discover until much later in life, if at all. Mr. Wooden writes in such an easy to understand and concise manner that kids will find it very easy but yet very powerful reading. It wasn't written specifically for kids, but they can certainly benefit the most before they get too set in their ways. ...
