5 stars (Thorough and engaging) - This book is used as a course text in many design classes across the country. I can see why. Not so much a history as it is a survey of the current state of graphic design, it's quite possibly the best treatment I've ever read on the subject in a single volume. The 3rd edition is significantly expanded in content and reformatted versus the 2nd, and the illustrative examples are abundant and well-chosen. Many of the examples are accompanied by remarks from the designers themselves, which helps shed light on the concepts and thought processes behind the work. The text strikes a good balance between commentary and pedagogy, and as a result the book works for both instructional reference and casual reading. The end of each chapter contains related exercises designed to prod your right brain into action. This book will help you discover -- or rediscover -- what's fun and exciting about graphic design. 3 stars (Good compilation but too many typographical errors) - This book would be wonderful if the editor had done a great job of fixing all the typographical errors. I lost concentration and kept correcting typing mistakes ...very unprofessional...makes you wonder who is teaching me...otherwise a good help 5 stars (Great resource for begining Designer) - I am a design student, and this was our textbook for one of my design foundation classes. The projects that we did in class (and are now in my portfolio) were modified versions of some of the exercises in this book. This book starts with the basics of 2D design and then builds on what you have learned. It is a great overview of other areas of design as well. This is a hands on book that allows you to learn by doing. If you are interested in graphic design go get this book! ... 5 stars (Outstanding book for all tenured management/executives) - Incredible book!!! Forget the rest of the management books if you don't follow and apply the knowledge in this book first. This book identifies what goes wrong with the best managers and how to get back on track. I read a ton of books and am extremely critical, but this is an obvious 5 star. It's an easy read and is applicable to both personal and professional relationships. 5 stars (great) - i ordered five books at the same time from all different suppliers and this was the first to come great timing and just a great company! 4 stars (Eye Opening) - While the storyline is a bit cheesy, this book drives home an important point. Poor personal choices taint our ability to view others objectively and interact appropriately. ... 5 stars (It has help) - This book is awesome. It has help me in many ways. The book has opened up my eyes and everything seems to be clear. I recommend this to everyone even if your not going through tough times. You can can see other people's expereince through this book. In somewhat ways everyone has expereince differently. 3 stars (Life Is Not a Bowl of Cherries.) - Most of us get all worked up about things which, upon closer examination, aren't really that big a deal. We focus on little problems and concerns and blow them out of proportion. One example is a minor problem in traffic when a stranger cuts in front and perhaps causes a near accident. We convince ourselves that we are justified in our anger. The other day, Jeff followed my directions to turn right, without looking to his left. A car was right up on him but, since no one was in the approaching lane, she was able to get over. Then she forced him off the road. I told him not to get out of the car as that was road rage. The woman gave him a good lecture, then cooled down when I said, "He's from Nashville. He didn't know where he was." Road rage and running through red lights are the things to do in this town. Do not worry about little things. Instead of "sweating the small stuff," take time to contemplate a solution. You'll have a lot more energy to be kinder and gentler. When your mind is clear and peaceful and your stress level is reduced, you'll have more fun. When your stress is small, it's manageable and easy to control. We all have high (optimistic about the future and grateful for the past)) and low, negative moods (life is never as bad as it seems at that time). In a low mood, you feel that your whole life is wrong. In a good mood, everything seems to go much better. Life is never fair. It should be, but it's not and it won't be someday. We determine our rate by not expecting fairness and feeling sorry for ourselves. It is our own challenge to overcome personal struggles. ... 5 stars (A college text on Welding) - This is the book we used in a college-level welding course I took. It covers virtually every aspect of welding from oxy-fuel, stick, MIG, TIG, SMAW, cutting, basic metallurgy, brazing, welding certification requirements, etc. This text is very detailed and you can directly reference chapters on welding processes you're interested in doing without having to read the entire (very thick) book. It is an excellent reference and covers step-by-step how to safely setup and use all types of welding gear, how to lay correct beads, how to spot defects, proper weld preparation, safety, and lab exercises to test your skills. I own several books on welding and this one blows them all out of the water by a very wide margin. The price is college textbook high, but you get what you pay for with this volume. This is a very professional and well organized reference and should be on every welder's book shelf. The above review is for the fifth edition of this book. Older versions are around but you should purchase the latest edition to keep abreast of new welding practices and techniques. 5 stars (An Excellent, well-written and well organized text) - I have used an earlier edition and this edition in self-study of welding technology and as an aid in the development of my welding skills necessary for certifications. The text is exceptionally well organized and thorough. The material is comprehensive in explaining not only about the various welding technologies, but also in presenting the proper techniques and practices of welding, including great color pictures showing both good and bad practices. Every aspect of the welder's skill set is covered. Additionally, there are comprehensive end-of-chapter review questions, an excellent glossary, and a useful index, which perhaps could be beefed up somewhat. All in all, this was a very readable, worthwhile addition to my metal trades library . My money was well spent. ... 5 stars (Must have book for every job seeker; insightful.) - Ok. This is the best of the best. Worth full price. I don't care so much for the exercises and things like that. But the book can be summed up as a three in one. It covers: Job seeking (main aspect) Interviewing Salary Negotiation As well as identifying your true passion and learn more about the type of jobs you would really like to do. People that succeed generally like what they do so this book is a great resource that will help you identify what you love to do. When work is enjoyable, you tend to do better, get promoted etc. I am a college grad and this book is worthy of being used in a college environment to teach a class that would cost far more than the price of this book. No matter what field of work you do, get this book if you are looking for a job. I guarantee you will learn about yourself and identify some of your inner goals and desires. 5 stars (What color is your parachute?) - I received the book in an excellent amount of time and it was in the condition stated when I purchased it, which was excellent. I recommend to every one. 5 stars (GREAT FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS) - This book gave me all kinds of tips that no professors were able to. It also provided me with insight on emotional aspects that can affect both the interviewer and interviewee during an interview. I cannot express how much I believe this book has to offer. It's definitely not on one of those books you buy and then think, 'Okay, so didn't I already know all of that?' ... 4 stars (Don't buy this book used!!!!!!!) - The book requires the user to take an on-line preference test to determine your "strengths". The publisher controls the process by printing a code on the inside of the jacket cover. Once the code is used, it cannot be reused. Thus, anyone who buys the book from someone who has already used the code to take the test will be unable to take the test. The book is almost worthless without the ability to take the online test. 5 stars (Useful business tool) - We purchased this great book and another must read book, Optimal Thinking--How To Be Your Best Self, for our customer service teams. This book gave us tremendous insight into individual and team talents and strengths. We then used Optimal Thinking to make the most of the identified strengths and to protect worst event scenarios when weaknesses could have severe consequences (example: Katrina). I think that the days of ignoring such weaknesses with "just be positive, it will all work out fine" are over for most of us. 5 stars (Play To Your Strengths) - The follow up to "First, Break All The Rules" (another excellent book), "Now" focuses on discovering and unlocking your strengths so that ulitmate you are playing with your best foot forward. Included when you buy this book, is a password that allows you to go on-line and take a test compossed by the same people who wrote the book, that will allow you to see what your top strenghts are. 2 stars (Not worth it) - I listen to Dave Ramsey every day and read his books, I really think he's on the ball with his advice and helping people a lot. I can also understand why he advertises and endorses Dan Miller; Miller's heart is clearly in the right place and Im sure he's amazing as a one-on-one job counseler. But this book isn't anything special. I just got off the job hunt and I have to say that much of this advice can be found for free, on the internet, and is part of the whole college experience (which is about finding what you like to do and studying it in further detail). The book mainly says, "look and find out what you really want to do", "go find companies that do it", "let your enthusiasm show" and "negotiate shrewdly". Yes, this is all good advice, but its mostly common sense - you dont need to spend $20 to learn this advice. So, you know, maybe Im too young and optimistic, but I really dont see the point or need for a book like this. Dave Ramsey, yes absolutely - everyone should listen to him. But Miller and his book - no, unless you go directly to him for job counseling. This book is much too general and non-commital to be of much use. 5 stars (48 Days to the Work You Love) - This book provides many practical and very helpful approaches to finding a good job. I had just lost a job that I loved for 28 years and needed a refresher to help me find another job to love. I found the book very helpful. 1 stars (Worth neither the time nor money) - This book essentially turned out to be a hardcover advertisement to buy more of the author's material in order to "really discover the work you love." It eluded to proving helpful for a moment with discovering more about ones potential vocation, but then gave YET ANOTHER reference to his website where you could purchase the information for another $37.50. The minor amount of basic material is the same as can be found on most any career counseling website, but with constant advertisements for the author's o... 4 stars (Very Helpful) - Found the book helpful and informative for those interested in getting into the mortgage brokerage business. 4 stars (Jameson L Thottam (previously with The Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore)) - Hi, My name is Jameson Thottam and work in the mortgage industry (having served as in exec positions (e.g., VP) with various firms such as The Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore), I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about how the mortgage industry works (soup to nuts: Mortgage Value Chain, Secondary Mortgage Loan Insider Trading, Marketing, and issues related to OCC / OTS / SEC / FDIC, RESPA legal issues & litigation, Operations and other significant issues). Hope you enjoy, Jameson Luke Thottam (Job History: Battery Ventures/The Loan Page, IndyMac Bank, Homestore, Morgan Stanley Investment Banking, LEK Management Consulting) 5 stars (Good Value for the New Person) - If you are interested in getting into the mortgage business, either as a loan officer, mortgage broker, or even a banker than you should read this book. I have been recruiting new loan officers for the company I work at for 12 years. And this is the first work I have seen that gives all this information at such a low cost. Before I found this book, I had been sending all new recruits to a local mortgage/real estate school that has a class teaching this same material. The cost was $97 per day. Now I just tell them to get a copy of this book. For some reason everyone thinks getting into the mortgage business is all fun and games and that everyone makes tons of money. It's not. It's hard work and you must take it seriously. I am glad the author did not sugar coat in his book. In fact, the thing I like best is that the author writes using easy to understand language. There is very little mortgage jargon to confuse people new to the business. And what there is, is explained. The author is not a tradiontal author. He is active in the industry everyday ... 5 stars (Food for Thought) - This book was recommended to me by an acquaintance, a man in his 70s who still runs his own business. We had a conversation at a wedding in which my husband and this man's wife were both part of the wedding party and we weren't. He told me a lot of interesting things about how this book had helped him and the last thing he said when we said goodbye was: The Power of the Subconscious Mind. It's by Murphy. A couple of months passed and I didn't even try to find the book. But then synchronistically, events in my life made me recall our conversation and I decided to get the book. This book is very uplifiting. Sometimes life seems like it is not really within our control. This book enables its readers to feel like they do have some control over how things go. On one hand, my rational mind still pokes at me and says, You cannot really believe this. On the other hand, in the intervening months, I've gone from being a librarian type who wore baggy clothes and had no self-esteem to someone that people pay attention to. I am now routinely told I am beautiful when I walk to work in the morning. Yesterday a 23 year old man told me I was "hard to miss" because I was "stunning". (I'm 42.) It's not like I exchanged bodies with Angelina Jolie or anything, so what could be making this difference? I think it must be that a few months ago, I "knew" I was dumpy and had lost my looks and now I "know" I'm beautiful. I'm healthier and happier than I've been in years. I've even managed to improve my eyesight with the techniques in this book. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But I don't think so. 5 stars (I`m so TERRIBLE when i`m filled with hard drugs) - Sorry everyone being a drug addict since 13 years old still affects i`m now 65.Buy this excellent book on the truth/subconscious it has everything you need to know to become a success.i`m even readin this book and i`m a retard on drugs. 5 stars (The power of the REAL TRUTH) - Excellent book on the truth o... 5 stars (Wedding Planner/Coordinator Guide ) - I loved this book because it didn't totally focus on the aspect of becoming a wedding planner, but also the more silent topics. It provided me with perfect examples of purchase orders, service requests, billing, and the how to's of marketing my future business. One can apply the information in this book to almost any personal business with a little tweeking of words and services, of course.... Highly recommend the FabJob Guide to becoming anything your heart desires!!! 4 stars (Dynamite!) - For the size and intent, this is the best book on the market. If you are thiking of becoming a professional wedding planner, this introductory book covers all the things you will have to learn. What it doesn't cover in detail, it points you in the direction of where you can find more information, with recommended websites and book titles. What it won't do, however, is teach you all the minute and various specific details that apply to your market and jurisdiction. As with any business, you still have to do a lot of legwork before you can actually make any money. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know exactly what's involved in getting started. 5 stars (A very useful book) - I have just finished reading this wonderful book. The information is precisely what I was looking for to start up my own wedding planning business. Over the years I had helped family and friends plan weddings and was wondering how I could do this as a paid career. The sections on getting clients, handling vendors and how much to charge for my services was really helpful. Also I agree with the other reviewer, the worksheets like the timeline schedule and budget sheet will be very useful. I am so excited to get started! ... 5 stars (Beginners Or Career Changers Pay Attention!) - I am a recent career changer. I have read a number of financial planning related books (Rattiner, Sestina, Stone etc..). Nancy's is tops at offering valuable, practical insight into the financial planning field. She passionately provides "must have" information on a profession that is long overdue--and badly in need of--career-track clarification. In both her book and in her role as moderator on Financial Planning Interactive's "Career Building" online forum, Nancy unselfishly shares her knowledge and acts as a mentor to those looking at this growing profession. 1 stars (amazon has a very slow shipping!!) - this is a review on amazon, not the book. i haven't got the book yet. but don't be fooled by the 'Usually ships within 24 hours' message. i ordered on sept 11, and the estimated dilevery date keeps moving...., now it's sept 26-30. what the hell? 5 stars (Super Job!) - Very very insightful and useful: right on in terms of what types of issues anyone doing quantitative financial analysis should be conversant in, things that should be on the tip of your tongue 2 stars (too old) - I bought this book one month ago from Amazon. Although the newest version, I think it is too old for today's interview. The questions in my interviews are not similar as those in the book and much harder. Actually, I don't expect to get answers from the book, only try to make myself less nervous if I have some idea what the question will look like, however, this book doesn't do the job. ... 5 stars (On my way and feel much more confident...) - Some book readings are affected greatly by your mood (well at least that's how I feel about advice book or self help book). That's how, sometimes, my opinions differ from the other Amazon.com's reviewers. The Bootstrapper's Bible is not one of them. This book certainly changed my entrepreneur outlook. I felt more confident knowing all the common senses and common mistakes that entrepreneurs should or should not make in the first place. I encouraged two important people in my life to read this "short e-booklet"; my brother (the bravest entrepreneur in the world) and my best friend (a born to be entrepreneur, but hasn't gathered all his courages to be one), hoping that they can be more succesful and more confident. Describing this e-booklet in this review would be an insult to Mr. Seth Godin, because the e-booklet is short (65 pages), very easy to read, and very cheap. Buy it (it's cost lest than 3 bucks) and let me know what you think. 4 stars (A word to the wise) - This book gives the reader wisdom and insight in things to think about before you start a business. Mr. Godin's willingness to share his experiences is greatly appreciated by this reader. 5 stars (Excellent book) - This book is an example of what a business book should be -- plain advice about how to go about starting and running a business. Seth Godin's book is the equivelant of having a very experienced business advisor to assist you. This is not a book about conceptual business ideals, this is a practical guide to managing the important aspects of business - cash flow, revenue, sales, etc. ...
