Night

5 stars ( Night ) - Night Author Elie Wiesel Have you ever been tortured to the point when you just want to give up and die? Well, Elie and his father have been through this experience. Elie is a young fifteen year old teenager who would battle for his right in any situation. He also lives with his father. He was born in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania and lived a modern life until the Nazis came to Elie's home town and started to gather up the jews. They were put into trains that were so crammed that you couldn't even sit down. No one had a clue where they were going. They then arrived at a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The sight of seeing children being thrown into the crematories made Elie think...is my life going to end here? Elie and his father were treated like rats and lived off of every scrap of food possible. All of a sudden Elie and his father had to change camps and head out to another concentration camp called Buchenwald. They had no transportation. The officers forced them to run nonstop to get there. Elie's father tried to give up and die in his sleep, but Elie kept trying to pursued his father to keep running until they could reach the camp. People were being trampled and many were freezing to death from the cold. No one cared, no one bothered to give any food, and the only thing Elie could think about was is there a way to survive? Or is this the end? Find out yourself and read the heart stopping thriller called Night (You won't believe what you will read!). Night is my most favorite book of all time, even though it is the most disturbing book that I have ever read. If you are not into the type of books that have love stories, drama, and happy endings I suggest you read this book. If you did not like The Diary of Anne Frank it would be better to read this book because it really explains how cruel the Nazis were to the poo...

Mother-Daughter Wisdom - Creating a Legacy of Physical and Emotional Health

5 stars (Mother-Daughter Wisdom) - I just got my book and have started reading it. Its great. I had seen Christiane Northrup on tv and she is great. She makes you think...."why didn't I think of that-its so simple" 1 stars (Cliches, platitudes and old chestnuts) - As mother of two teenagers, I had high hopes for this book, but I almost gagged on the number of trite sayings this author can cram into a paragraph. You will find "great" insights like: mothers are very important in an infant's life, two year olds are announcing their independence, and it's important to keep channels of communication open with your daughter even when things aren't going smoothly. And I paid how much money to learn THAT?? If you have had your eyes and ears open for any length of time, you will find nothing new in this book. It is all hype and marketing with no substance. And wisdom? That's the biggest hype of all. Save your money and just go talk to your daughter. 5 stars (Wow! Awesome Book! Mothers of Daughters: Get This Book!) - First off, this book makes a great gift to anyone you know who has a daughter regardless of age. It makes a great baby shower gift, also. I just want to start by saying, I first saw this book and I skimmed through it, but didn't buy it. I was very skeptical. I am a well read individual and I was thinking: "I don't need another lame self help book by some would be expert that sits on my shelf that I never read. My daughter's five: there is a bunch of birth, pregnancy stuff in the book. I am past those stages and don't need a book that covers stuff I don't need." However, I ended up going back and getting the book. I am SO glad I did. Now I am here to say: this book is amazing. Reading the book made me want to read all of her books. I took so many notes and have already started using some of what she wrote. For those of you who consider yourself Moms who care about being good Moms, this book is a great compass for how to raise your daughters well. It ...

Peace Is Every Step - The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life

5 stars (the most useful and practical) - spiritual guidebook I have ever read. No faith is required, only simple practices 5 stars (We all need a reminder......) - I read this book over the course of three mornings. A great way to start the day. A simplistic yet profound message that will change the way you look at yourself and other people. I love how at one point he directs our attention to the page we are reading stating how a sheet of paper is more than just a sheet of paper. It contains the clouds, the rain, the sun, the trees, the logger (even the logger's wheat breakfast),etc. One cannot exist without the other. How often do we focus on every breath we take? Consciously, we can breathe in while we "heal our bodies", then breathe out and "smile" (which I am sure most of us are lacking). This is a quick, yet effective, exercise you can try right now as you read these reviews -- breathing and smiling. Smiling works. It changes how you feel and it affects others positively. Try it the next time you are out and about. We are all connected. His message in this book is beautiful. Can't wait to read more and revisit this one in the near future to increase my understanding of his philosophies of mindful living. Enjoy! 5 stars (Life Changing Book) - I have read this book like 5 times and everytime I read it I learn something new. This book has changed my life and the way that I treat others. I would recomend this book to anyone who is looking for themselves or something bigger than themselves, for anyone who is looking for answers this book has them. I have bought copies for my friends and have loaned my own out and everyone I have given it too has said the same thing that they couldn't put it down and that it was just what they were looking for. Read this book and open your mind and heart up to it and it will change you. ...

The Greatest Salesman in the World

5 stars (The greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino) - The Greatest Salesman in the World is an uplifting, motivating and inspiring book on sales and salesmanship. The author presents principles of good salesmanship in the form of a fascinating story which make it easy and interesting to remember the important principles. He does this through simple and direct parables which are woven into a profound story, with clever plot twists to explain the 10 principles for successful salesmanship as well as success in life. I loved to read the book because it is small and can be read and finished in a couple of hours and yet leave one with a deep impression. The book is recommended for beginners and veterans in the profession of selling. 1 stars (The only great salesman is the author) - An old rich merchant from the Bible times tries to pass on his secret to success. That "secret" is written in 10 ancient strolls who were given to him by another rich merchant before he died. These tips to accumulate wealth are nothing but cheap self-improvement-new-age advice that have nothing to do with business. For example, in the stroll marked 1, you can read: "Today I will savor the taste of grapes from these vines and verily I will swallow the seed of success buried in each and new life will sprout within me". The stroll marked 2 starts with this sentence: "I will greet this day with love in my heart" and number 4 begins with "I am nature's greatest miracle". This is the kind of insights you may expect from any book but a one called "The greatest salesman in the world". And it is so short: only 111 pages of really big print. If you want to read these kind of books, but written by good authors, please refer to Paulo Coelho. 5 stars (A very Powerful Book!) - The Greatest Salesman in The World is a classic case of not judging the quality of a book by it's size. This slim little book initially doesn't appear to be much or have much information. But once applied, it is powerful. ...

Ishmael- An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit

3 stars (No doubt about it, we're screwed.) - What you should remember when reading this is that it is simply one way of looking at things, one opinion, one way of looking at humankind and where we're headed. After I finished reading this, I thought "no way, the Goddess will save us." And I sure as hell hope She does because this book points out what nobody wants to hear: we're doomed. So why not just kick back and enjoy life and leave the worries to the next generations? Because think about it. If you got inoperable cancer from a certain type of toothpaste, wouldn't you try to stop others from using said toothpaste so that they too wouldn't get inoperable cancer? That's why this book is important. 5 stars (Really Good) - Lots of people have summarized it so I wont waste my time. This book is fantastic and really good book for anyone. I think it should be required in school. If you dont like this book, you did not have an open mind and that is the only thing you can have when you read this book. READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 stars (Wow. Just wow.) - Upon finishing this book (for the second time because once wasn't enough), I promptly sent the below email to everyone in my address book. It says everything a reveiw needs. You should read this book. Everyone should read this book. The name of the book is "Ishmael" and it's author is Daniel Quinn. I won't tell you much about it because any words I would use would make it sound foolish and it is quite the opposite. It is fiction, non-fiction, history, and future all rolled into one. I finished it a week ago, looked at it in wonderment, turned it over and read it again. The basis of the book is the response of a disgruntled, disillusioned gentleman to an ad in the personals section of the paper: "Teacher seeks pupil... Apply in person. Must have earnest desire to save the world." The story is simply the philisophical dialogue that follows between he and his teacher about "how things came to be this way" and what to do about...

Pain Free - A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain

5 stars (Success with "Pain Free" by Pete Egoscue) - After two years of listening to my friends rave about diminishing the pain from sports injuries with the Egoscue exercises, I finally purchased my own copy. I was amazed at how easy the exercises are, and neck and shoulder pain I had for years diminished after only 10 days. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a drug free way to conquer pain. 5 stars (Really Works -- say goodbye to chronic pain) - Egoscue says that most chronic pain is caused by poor posture and poor body mechanics (e.g., moving wrong). The solution -- a set of stretches that teach you good posture and good body mechanics. These "E-cises" are gentle and easy to perform. They do take a bit of time, 10 to 90 min depending on your problem, but the results are amazing. Everyone I've convinced to actually sit down and do E-cises for their chronic pain problem has experienced noticable improvement after just one session: weak knees, aching wrists, sore ancles, stiff neck & shoulders, headaches, and more. If you have any sort of nagging discomfort, even a minor one, give "Pain Free" a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised! Egoscue also has a radio program Saturday mornings in Colorado, which is how I first heard of this book, and clinics where you can get a personalized E-cise plan. 5 stars (Amazing Book, it really works!) - The book is amazing. I have a really bad back from working jobs standing on my feet all day. Someone told me about this book at work and I now do the exercises daily. The exercises require no stretching, 30-40 minutes only. The exercises use gravity to pull your body back into it's functional state. Using the book is like going to a chiropractor every day, only it does not cost several hundred dollars. Dr. Pete Egoscue is truly an amazing human being for sharing his knowledge. Once you read the book and use the exercises it will make total sense! The body is meant to move and be active, not to sit down all day due...

Emotional Intelligence - Why It Can Matter More Than IQ

5 stars (Neurology of emotions) - This book does an excellent job of explaining how the brain is overpowered by emotions. You also learn that if you are in an extreme state of emotional arousal, your rational ability is impaired. To deal with emotions, I strongly recommend Rosalene Glickman's book, Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self and the Optimal thinking emotional mastery wallet cards. In the Optimal thinking resources, you receive a clear explanation of each emotion, why they are caused and how to be deal with each troublesome emotion. You are provided with questions to understand and resolve them. Both of these books are excellent. 4 stars (Good overview of how emotions affect - and sometimes rule - our lives) - I suppose I was first interested in this book, which has been around quite some time now, by the often quoted assertion that emotional intelligence - EQ - is now more important to career development and job performance than IQ. What I found was a good explanation of how humans are affected and sometimes governed by their emotions. The book is one of an interesting genre - popular social science, a bit like the work of Malcolm Gladwell - and I must admit it had me gripped to start with. By the end of the book, I was a bit over it, because it tends to look at how EQ can be boosted in kids and obviously being a fully-grown adult I was interested to know how I could boost my own EQ and in doing so boost my chances of early promotion, unfathomed success and early retirement. The book is pretty good at explaining the process of emotional reactions and I love the phrase "emotional hijacking" - when our emotions take over. I suppose the real value in this book is understanding as a whole how your brain works and what exactly your emotions are. If this has contributed anything to my quality of life, it is probably the realisation of how emotions follow patterns and how simple facial gestures, such as rolling your eyes, can trigger an adverse r...

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind- Revised Edition

5 stars (Food for Thought) - This book was recommended to me by an acquaintance, a man in his 70s who still runs his own business. We had a conversation at a wedding in which my husband and this man's wife were both part of the wedding party and we weren't. He told me a lot of interesting things about how this book had helped him and the last thing he said when we said goodbye was: The Power of the Subconscious Mind. It's by Murphy. A couple of months passed and I didn't even try to find the book. But then synchronistically, events in my life made me recall our conversation and I decided to get the book. This book is very uplifiting. Sometimes life seems like it is not really within our control. This book enables its readers to feel like they do have some control over how things go. On one hand, my rational mind still pokes at me and says, You cannot really believe this. On the other hand, in the intervening months, I've gone from being a librarian type who wore baggy clothes and had no self-esteem to someone that people pay attention to. I am now routinely told I am beautiful when I walk to work in the morning. Yesterday a 23 year old man told me I was "hard to miss" because I was "stunning". (I'm 42.) It's not like I exchanged bodies with Angelina Jolie or anything, so what could be making this difference? I think it must be that a few months ago, I "knew" I was dumpy and had lost my looks and now I "know" I'm beautiful. I'm healthier and happier than I've been in years. I've even managed to improve my eyesight with the techniques in this book. Maybe it's just a coincidence. But I don't think so. 5 stars (I`m so TERRIBLE when i`m filled with hard drugs) - Sorry everyone being a drug addict since 13 years old still affects i`m now 65.Buy this excellent book on the truth/subconscious it has everything you need to know to become a success.i`m even readin this book and i`m a retard on drugs. 5 stars (The power of the REAL TRUTH) - Excellent book on the truth o...

Don-t Shoot the Dog- - The New Art of Teaching and Training

1 stars (Don't Believe the Hype! The Ineffective Art of Teaching and Training) - I love the title of this book. The contents, however, perpetuate the mythology of behavioral science as an actual science that always and inevitably works to change, shape, or modify behavior. It's not, and it doesn't. In fact, in my opinion it has become more like a belief system--based on a tautology*--where despite mounting evidence of its overall ineffectiveness, particularly when it comes to solving behavioral problems in dogs (which is my own area of expertise, and where it only works about 15% of the time), its adherents continue to tout it as highly successful. They also wrongly claim that ALL dog training takes place through some form of operant conditioning, whether the trainer is aware of it or not. (Most dog training is actually closer to respondent than to operant conditioning, but that's another topic**.) Still, Pryor makes a convincing argument for applying the ideas of B. F. Skinner to everything from dolphin training to the little problems of everyday life, even though the preponderance of Skinner's ideas have been proven invalid. Even Skinner's student Keller Breland, who invented clicker training and later became Pryor's mentor, sadly discovered that, "There are definite weaknesses in the philosophy underlying these techniques." ("Behavior Problems in Organisms," American Psychologist, 1961.) I have to admit, though, even I was suckered in by Pryor's fervent belief in conditioning when I first read this book. She has that effect on people. And, energized by her passion, I began using her ideas in my dog training practice in New York City. I quickly found out, though, that conditioning techniques are mostly ineffective, and that, believe it or not, using food rewards can actually cause a negative learning experience for the dog, because it isn't intrinsic to learning most of the behaviors a dog needs to learn.*** However, I wouldn't want to discourage...

Sink Reflections- Overwhelmed- Disorganized- Living in Chaos- The FlyLady-s Simple FLYing Lessons Wi

5 stars (Sink Reflections Reinforces the Website) - I am a big FlyLady fan and I subscribe to the website. I find the website really motivates me because of all those daily e-mails. The book is handy when you don't have time to get on the web and also if you like things in printed form like I do. Those emails can be overwhelming sometimes and that's when I turn to the book. The system is fabulous--baby steps towards getting your home and your life organized. The book is a condensed version of the website. You can really get all you need from the site, so if you are an avid internet user, you really don't need the book. I like it anyway. 5 stars (FlyLady Gave Me a PEACEFUL Home!) - I suppose I don't fall into the sterotypical FlyBaby category. My husband & I don't have any children. I spend most of my week in the office, shuttling from one meeting to the next. I am not a stay at home wife or mother. Yet, although FlyLady's tips and routines may seem obvious to some, they weren't obvious to ME. I am not depressed. I am a very confident, intellegent, successful professional. But when it came to my home, it was totally out of control. And I kept falling into the trap of thinking that the CHAOS of our home must be due to some complex, time management problem. I've never been much of a pack-rat, neither has my husband. So, the amount of clutter in our home was minimal (though there was SOME...especially in our attic, laundry room and garage). Our problem has always been trying to find a way to keep up w/ the daily chores of life. My husband & I both spend our mornings & evenings fighting grid-lock traffic in the city. We spend the majority of day running from meeting to meeting in our respective careers. We get home at night, exhausted most of the time. Nobody wants to cook. Nobody wants to clean. Nobody wants to pick up and put stuff away, or throw out the stuff we don't need. Then the weekend rolls around & we're playing "catch up." No time for us or our ma...

The Prince

2 stars (Finally on CD, but needed a better reader! Bring out Nelson Runger's version!) - This is a great book to study, and I have looked forward to it on CD. I had an old cassett with another reader, a male actor, and translation by Bull, that was just wonderful to listen to. He brought out the force of Machiavelli's ideas - drove them home. He read it like the serious stuff that it is! Unfortunaely this reader (and some of the translation) does not bring out the power of this book. Rather bland, I have to say. Read like trying to get through it fast and all of it on the same level. Nothing really highlighted. Comentary and historical supporting evidence Maciavelli uses is read in the same tone as a passage like this: "For this can be said about men: that they are ungrateful, fickle, dissembling, anxious to flee danger, and covetous of gain. So long as you promote their advantage, they are all yours, as I said before, and will offer you their blood, their goods, their lives, and their chldren when the need for these is remote. When the need arises, however, they will turn against you." Now that is good stuff! And it deserved a better reading. 5 stars (A Classic) - This book is a must read for anyone who is interested in politics. A short and interesting book about how people are governed. Niccolo Machiavelli wrote a book that trancends time and place. 4 stars (How to get ahead in politics.) - This little book is packed with details. For anyone that wants a true understanding of politics this book is a must read. Things are not much different today. The ends still justify the means. ...
