Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 5 10th Anniversary Edition

5 stars (Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 review) - This is a very simple program to use & has many nice features. I'm mainly using it to make picture videos & it does a good job at it. 4 stars (One of the better consumer Video Editing/DVD Authoring solutions) - I am suprised to see so many people trash this suite so quickly. I never use it for burning CDs/DVDs/Audio player (Nero, Winamp anyone?), but a combination of Roxio Capture, Videowave Professional and DVD Builder is really good for camcorder DV->DVD video editing and conversion. Features include support for still images, videos of differing resolutions/specs, video effects, overlays, text overlays, etc. you name it. Pinnacle Studio 9 is still a notch better in terms of features (the only feature that this suite doesn't seem to have - manipulation of audio volume of video tracks in the timeline), but its wickedly unstable and gets my Oscar for the most crash friendly program. Call it my uncanny luck, but Studio used to corrupt my projects just after I spend hours editing the video and done with it making me start all over again. I was looking for a stable alternative and this suite has saved my day. 1 stars (Extremely Unstable Program) - After spending 6 weeks capturing and editing a video, which the program did well, the burning process is extremely unstable. It will burn the video to a DVD-RW (rewrightable) disk but not to a non rewritable disk. I have tried 4 different manufacturers DVD disk and after 2 1/2 hours it takes to burn, I get error messages on every one and the disks will not play. I have wasted time and disks (they are unusable after the burning) to get no results. I have spent hours with Roxio's direct email support and with phone support and get "this is most unusual" but no solutions. I have deleted and reinstalled the program 3 times, as suggested by tech support, and still get the same results. I have sent for a back up disk as support also suggested that the original disk may be faulty....

Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005

1 stars (Dont waste your money) - It seems to protect my computer alright. However I constantly have problems when I startup. It has problems updating, and constantly says my user ID is incorrect. However when I restart several times this gets straight. Also I have to turn off the firewall each time I log on to Hotmail and some other webpages since I still havent figured out how to allow them. Also the parental controls are total crap. It would be nice if it would block what it says it does and if you could put in whatever addresses you wanted. 1 stars (WARNING) - After being unable to successfully install this software on our computer (for some reason, the software thinks our computer has less than the required minimum 128 megabytes of RAM, when it has 2.5 GIGABYTES of RAM), we called Panda Software. Please note: THERE IS NO TOLL FREE NUMBER FOR THIS COMPANY IN THEIR PACKAGE INSERTS. The representative we spoke with informed us that the software WILL NOT WORK on systems with more than two gigabytes of RAM. Personally, I would recommend buying a different antivirus program. 2 stars (don't download) - I bought the CD last year and had no trouble at all. The product was absolutely wonderful. Then, I downloaded the update from the website this year and had nothing but trouble until I uninstalled it. They did issue a full refund. I may try the physical product again. ...

AlohaBob PC Relocator Ultra Control 2005

5 stars (PC Relocator Works) - Although it did not work as quickly or effortlessly as I imagined, it is much faster and easier than any other method I've used. The included 2m transfer cable was not long enough for my installed set-up, but it worked fine with a USB extension cable. The better you prepare the old PC and the new PC, the better it works. I transferred from Win98SE to XPPro with very few issues after the move (some minor OS incompatibilities, easily resolved in XPPro). Do read everything before starting. I recommend this product without reservations to everyone. 5 stars (Great product!) - Very easy to use. Just followed the instructions and all of my data was relocated to my new computer. 1 stars (Program nightmare and customer service gulag) - I'm not a novice user and read the instructions carefully before proceeding to move to a new computer with Windows XP Pro and Office 03. I did not try to migrate programs, but only files. What a mess! The program must have moved registry settings (who asked it to?) and the new computer was so screwed up I thought I was going to have to reformat. Meanwhile, customer service was virtually non-existent. When things get screwed up, one needs help right away...not in 48 hours or more! Then I filed for a refund and they've been dragging their heels (and ignoring last few emails) on that front although I qualified and presented all pertinent paperwork. It's been nearly two months! Although I was willing to try and let them resolve issues as their sales hype had assured me, that promise proved to be more fiction and less reality. Absolutely unsatisfactory! RUN...RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM THIS PROGRAM! I haven't posted reviews in the past, but this experience was so bad that I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of discontented buyers. And wish I had taken those negative reviews to heart before I purchased this particular program! ...

Norton SystemWorks 2005 Premier - Single User AntiVirus- Utilities- GoBack- Ghost- CheckIT

5 stars (No problems with the install or the registration/activation) - Today,I upgraded from Systemworks 2003 Professional Edition to the Systemworks 2005 Premier on a PC with Windows XP Home Edition. It took approximately 30 minutes to load and register and everything went smoothly. Before starting, I read every review written here at Amazon so I'm well aware that my experience is not typical. I am offering the following suggestions in hopes that it may help someone who still has not been able to get it loaded or is about to try loading it for the first time. 1. First, to install this product on a XP machine, Norton says your processor should be a minimum of 300mhz (they neglect to tell you this on the outside of the box when they list the Minimum Systen Requirements) 2. Your Internet Explorer should be updated to version 6 3. If you have an earlier version of Systemworks (from 2003 and up) on your PC, don't uninstall it - if your version is earlier than 2003, you Must uninstall it before loading the new one. 4. Close all other Window programs - including those running in the System Tray. 5. Put in the Norton CD and click on "Install Norton SystemWorks" when the first panel comes up. 6. You'll be asked to accept the License Agreement" and then to enter your Product Key (it's long - 24 characters - and it appears on the back of your CD sleeve). 7. You're advised next to do a virus scan - so just click the "Start Scan" 8. It then asks you to select an Installation Type - the most trouble free choice here is the default - "Install Now". 9. Next, the software picks a folder where it wants to install the program...but, it gives you the ability to click "Browse" and change to another folder location. Again, the most trouble free choice here is the default. 10.It will then suggest that you Restart windows....then you are Done with the install (you still must register and activate). 11. At this point, after the Windows restart, I did get a couple of error me...

Norton AntiVirus 2005 Home Protection Pack - 3 Users

4 stars (Norton Antivirus purchase) - I like the product. But Norton Antivirus, Symantec did not except my rebate offer and indicated my original receipt which was an Amazon receipt was not valid. I will not purchase from Symantec again. 5 stars (No problems) - I don't understand the amount of negative feedbacks out there, but it seems there are a lot of Symantec/Norton bashers, yet Symantec products (at least virus protection ones) continue to be the best sellers among retailers, computer manufacturers, and large companies. I have been using computers since 1996, by all means a novice, and started out initially with McAfee upon everyone's recommendations. It always seemed to require too much user input, and not knowing much comupter anti virus lingo, I kept having all sorts of problems (Freezing, pop-ups for McAfee sale pitches, errors, excessive prompts for specific actions, and YES viruses, with very poor customer service). When I bought my second computer (IBM) in early 2000, it came with Norton pre-installed, and what a difference! I never had to do anything to the software. It just worked in the background, and never had a problem. I have been a Norton/Symantec fan since. Every year, I purchase and upgrade to the new software, simply because it is free after rebates, instead of paying to renew my subscription. I tried one year the NIS, and it did slow my computer, so I went back to the NAV. We have 3 desktop and 3 laptop computers, running W98, ME and XP. Never had a problem with viruses, and all computers have Norton running just smoothly in the background. Never had any problems with installation, and the current 3 users pack was even easier, because it automatically uninstalled the prior versions (Norton Professional 2003 and 2004). It updates itself automatically, and simply works (you just don't even know it is working). Not one single computer had a virus in over 5 years. I still have my IBM Aptiva, W98, 550MHZ Athlon, and an older 450MHZ Celeron Toshiba...

Detto Move2Mac USB

1 stars (Worst customer support on the planet!) - This software does not do everything it claims on the front of the box. Read the small print (Inside the box) and cross your fingers. Forget calling customer support. Even the supervisor will not return calls when promised. They really don't care about you at all! This is a very dodgy outfit. I wish or rather hope the people who run or own the company would find out what is happening in customer services and support. This really is the worst product and support level I have ever experienced in my life by such a long way. 1 stars (Use an iPod instead) - I was thinking of getting this product before I realized I could use my iPod to transfer files from PC to Mac. See http://www.apple.com/switch/howto/ipod/ for details. 1 stars (Markedly overpriced and trickily marketed) - Relatively simple untility that costs a lot. When I tried to move data from more than one of my home PCs I learned that I needed another license at a cost of $45 from Detto. This was not disclosed on the box, though they told me it was located in the license agreement you must agree to when you install the software -- which unfortunately wasn't available to me when I purchased the software. ...

Internet Security Barrier X Backup Edition Mac

1 stars (Backup component confusing, not as advertised) - This review pertains to the back up component of the suite (which seems to be the distinguishing feature for this bundle as opposed to others), Personal Backup X. Intego Personal Backup X is a poor choice for someone looking for simple, robust backups without additional hardware. Contrary to Intego's marketing, it cannot back up to multiple CDs/DVDs. It's also confusing, and doesn't include a manual. DIFFICULTY OF USE: On launch, PBX displays a window asking for a source and destination, and whether to "backup," "restore," "archive," or "clone." It doesn't explain the difference between these actions. There's no "Help" feature. It's a bad sign when even experienced users must read the manual cover to cover. Worse, the manual is not installed by default and must be downloaded from Intego's web site. Advanced features are accessed through a confusing "New Script..." menu item. Having a minimalist interface is NOT `ease of use.' NO SUPPORT FOR MULTIPLE CDs/DVDs: Intego claims, "Intego Personal Backup X backs up your data, either automatically or manually, to removable media (such as recordable CD-Roms or Zip cartridges), to partitions on your hard disk, to network volumes, to an iDisk, to external hard drives (USB, Firewire or SCSI) or to disk image files." But as an Intego representative later explained, "Personal Backup X does not have a method or procedure to backup across multiple disks. It can not 'span' CDs or DVDs." All recent computers have hard drives too large for one DVD or CD. Consumers expect any backup program claiming to support CD/DVD to support multiple discs. So it is NOT practical to back up to CD, DVD, Zip disk, etc. with Personal Backup. PBX may work for those with external hard drives or tape drives, but most of them probably use Dantz Retrospect. Since most computers now come with CD/DVD burners, most home users looking for a cheap solution probably want to back up to CD/DVDs, but they'...

AlohaBob PC Backup

1 stars (Not very flexible. OK if you just accept all the defaults.) - I really dislike this software. I'm the type that likes to customize everything and this program just is not made that way. First, when you initially select files and folders, your disk choices are "C:" or "ALL". I have several disks and I want to pick and choose, but this program makes that really difficult. Then you have to pick a destination where the files will be backed up. Choose carefully, because you won't be allowed to change it later! And if you want to do incremental backups, be sure to schedule it before you do the initial save, because you can't do it later. Basically the entire job, future backups and all, must be defined completly at the beginning and can never be changed without completely starting over. 5 stars (Great product for backup) - Excellent product for backup with the intelligence built into it. Highly recommended! 3 stars (A few obvious things missed) - 1) PC Backup doesn't recognize my External Harddrive connected through a USB 2.0 port, under Windows XP Professional, even after a re-boot. I have to Browse and point to it each time the software starts up. 2) It cannot run an incremental back-up on demand. Instead, an incremental back-up must be scheduled. 3) It is slower than Backup which comes free with Windows XP. If you are dissatisfied with Windows XP's Backup, and don't find the features mentioned in the reviews above compelling, I recommend to continue searching for something better. ...

Stomp Backup My PC 2005

4 stars (Backup My PC 2005 works excellent) - I use scheduled backup's of "My Documents" and it's excellent. 1 stars (Useless) - It doesn't tell you it doesn't work with XP Home. In fact, each time I would try to do a backup it would restart my computer. Then I would get a message from XP saying it had recovered from a serious error. Following that I would get a Microsoft Crash Analysis Report. The program scares the crap out of me. SUPPORT-- NON EXISTANT. 2 stars (Image Backup Doesn't Work on Pre-installed System) - I purchased this software to do readily-restorable image backups for disaster recovery, if ever necessary. I immediately encountered a problem because the program asked for a 16-digit Product ID and Serial Number of my Windows XP installation CDs. Like many people who have purchased systems (mine is a Compaq Presario), the operating system was pre-installed, and I did not receive any Windows XP installation CDs. The recovery CDs supplied with the system had no Product ID or Serial Number. E-mail from StumpSoft (which was returned in 24 hours) indicated that this was a common problem -- with Dell, HP (others?) -- major computer distributors. The alternative suggested was a more elaborate restoration process, which would involve my recovery CDs, file backup, and a "system stamp." It was not the one-step disaster restoration that I was looking for. I might say too that this significant limitation was documented neither in the manual nor in the advertising material. So, I decided to uninstall the software. The uninstall process did not work properly. When I rebooted, Windows was now looking for a missing file for the StumpSoft Update Manager (which supposedly was uninstalled). I was able through Windows Add/Delete Programs to do a "Change," reinsert the StumpSoft CD, and get the missing file back -- fortunately. I give two stars (instead of one) for the prompt E-mail response with a clear explanation of the situation. ...

AlohaBob PC Relocator 2005

1 stars (Disappointing version of what was once great software) - Several years ago, I bought PC Relocator 4.0 when I acquired a new computer. Version 4.0 allowed you to pick and choose what programs and files you wanted to transfer. It took some time to set up both computers and to select the many files and programs I wanted to transfer, but once that was done the transfer went flawlessly. When I recently bought a new computer, the first thing I did was go to the store and buy the latest version, PC Relocator 6.0, remembering how well it worked the first time around. To my dismay, I found what James Honeycutt described in an earlier review. Instead of allowing you to pick and choose which software and files to move, you have to move everything. It's all or none. Since I planned to upgrade most of my software, I wanted to move just two or three programs to the new computer, and I wanted to move only about half of my documents. The rest was older stuff that I was going to delete. As Mr. Honeycutt described, in order to pick and choose the things you want to move, you have to buy the Ultra Control version. If you have already bought the regular version and you want to upgrade to Ultra Control, it will cost you an additional $39.95. In the end, I copied the files I wanted onto a couple CD's did not use PC Relocator at all. The reason I am giving this product only one star is that none of this is made clear on the box. When I bought PC Relocator years ago, there was only one version that did everything. When I purchased this version, I wasn't even aware that Alohabob was now offering two versions of PC Relocator: this stripped down version and the full version. Unlike other software products, there was no grid or other description on the back of the box showing what each version could or couldn't do. Most software with multiple versions will have a side-by-side comparison so that you can decide which one is right for you. PC Relocator does not have a side by side comp...

Micromat PodLock Mac

3 stars (Review for the Alaska Apple Users Group) - Utility maker, Micromat, has moved from the Mac into the bigger world of Apple hardware with their iPod utility, PodLock. While it's not alone in the arena, PodLock performs a few functions that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. While PodLock lets you peruse the entire contents of your iPod (including songs, pictures, and recordings), it's main purpose is to provide users with the ability to backup, optimize, and secure data stored on your iPod. The interface resembles a 3G iPod. The pseudo-iPod's screen shows the technical details of any connected iPod while all the program's functions are immediately available through one-touch buttons buttons. While this interface metaphor is simple and familiar, it isn't standard, so some elements don't look very good, particularly drawers. Those drawers are used to display three categories of iPod content - music, pictures, and audio recordings. Each drawer displays a list of the associated files. Details can be displayed on any file and, best of all, music can be played and pictures can be viewed directly off the iPod! That means you can sample music from someone else's iPod. The real power feature of the program, however, is the ability to create an invisible partition on your iPod for storing data if you have at least 500MB free. After determining the size of the partition you can lock access with a password and even use Apple's FileVault encryption to further secure the contents. This provides a comforting alternative to the simpler iPod disk mode option offered in iTunes. But wait, that's not all! PodLock has one more feature to add to your piece of mind. With a single click you can save a backup of all the data on your iPod. That means that after the loss or accidental reformatting of your iPod, an equally simple restore function will bring all of the contents back. As an added bonus, you can use PodLock to analyze and then defrag your iPod's drive, improving...

System Mechanic 5

3 stars (Slow defrag and Registry Cleanup is buggy) - Don't bother using "speed up hard drives" on the "Optimize" tab...the defrag routine will literally run forever. Also, be aware that "Clean Registry" in the "PC Maintenance Wizard" does not do anything except identify deletable items...it does not remove them. In fact, the Wizard reports "None found" even though when running, it clearly identifies deletable items. If you want System Mechanic to actually remove old registry items, you have to run the routine separately from the "Fix" tab using "Fix Registry Problems". I reported this flaw to Iolo around the first of 2005 and they acknowledged the problem but have not released any fix (how ironic!). Overall, System Mechanic is Ok but the interminable defrag and goofy registry cleaner are real downers. 2 stars (Alright Software) - The only thing that saves this product is it's registry cleaner. If you need a firewall or spyware remover don't bother with these, try Webroot's Spyswepper or Norton's or McAfee's firewall. 1 stars (A DISASTER! If you must go iolo, stick with SM 4...) - "This product is full of pitfalls." I have this on very good authority (my service technicians), although I personally haven't found but ONE, I guess, since the attempted installation corrupted my hard drive to the degree that even Safe Mode was unavailable. I really liked SM 4.0 Pro but, after this nightmare (and the subsequent lack of any help whatever from iolo), I urge you to stay away from 5.0. BTW, there are no refunds under ANY circumstances so, if your pc crashes (to the tune of $150 in my case) you'll also be out the cost of the program. ...

Executive Diskeeper 9 Home Edition

5 stars (diskeeper 9) - this is an excellent program for keeping HD neat and clean. windows has a defrangment program built in but after using diskeeper 9 i wont use windows verson again. as a test i defragmented my HD using windows then used diskeeper 9 to see how well windows did ...............no comparison. diskeeper found defragments all over my HD. i love the "set it and forget it" on diskeeper. i use the screensaver set up,. so when ever my PC is running and my screen saver comes up, diskeeper goes into action and defragments the HD, which keeps my PC running fast. speaking of fast i also noticed the diskeeper ran faster then windows for defragmenting. windows has been known to take up to 2 hours + for defragmenting. diskeeper took less then 30 mins the first time running, now it takes 1-5 mins if that due to the set up i choose. mind you i am not a PC expert but i can find my way around a PC pretty well. so i am HIGHLY recommending diskeeper 9. 5 stars (Great product) - I purchased Diskeeper 9 after using version 7 for a few years. Version 9 is a big improvement. It keeps my files in order, and does it a lot faster. Great product it does a much better job than the windows version. 3 stars (getting better) - I have yet to see executive's defragger outperform O&O Defragger software or Raxco's Perfectdisk. If I were to place these 3 programs, it would be: 1st place - O&O Defrag V8.0 2nd place - Raxco perfect disk V7.0 3rd - Winternal's defragger utility/ Executive's "diskkeeper" O&O is like THE defragger to use. A real, true "swiss army knife" of defragger's. Choose "HOW" you defrag a system, based upon how it is used. You have like 6 ways to defrag, based upon how YOU want it done. [Example: workstation, file server, database server, etc] All of the above mentioned companies offer DEMOs of their programs. Do yourself a favor and "test-drive" each product BEFORE you buy. ...
