5 stars (Essential training aid for first time Marathoners!) - I bought this book after deciding to run my first marathon (ran 3 miles runs casually prior to training) and just came across it while browsing. It's worth its weight in gold and then some. I am following a training program separate from the one in the book (mine is a 3 day a week) but the information in each chapter on mental and physical preparation (and expections for the week) has been right on the mark. I think that the book's best quality is the emphasis it places on mental preparation and techniques to use during runs. I've learned through doing that training to run a marathon is more mental than physical...and I assume that will hold for October 30th when I do the Marine Corps Marathon. I am not overstating it when I say I will owe my confidence and solid preparation in large part to this book. As some mentioned in other reviews, the actual layout of the book could use some work, but I just dog-ear the important pages so I can turn to them quickly. 5 stars (Invaluable) - This book lives up to its title. It truly outlines for the *average* person, how to prepare for a marathon. It includes how tos from the pros and testimonials and tips from novice runners who have used the book and class to run a marathon. I am currently using it to train and can't believe how well I am doing with its help! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to do something memorable like run in a marathon but never thought they could do it because of age, weight, physical condition, or even not liking to run. 5 stars (This book changed my life!!) - I bought this book about a month ago, pretty much on a whim. I thought, "What the heck! I'm 26, I'm not getting younger, might as well try to do something huge while I still have health and youth." So I figured, why not a marathon? I am still in the first parts of the training, but already I have seen INCREDIBLE results! I never really ran at all before. But I we... 1 stars (This triathlete agrees) - The strength of triathlon strength training plans comes from authors who realize that weights augment other endurance training. Strength training must be seen as part of a larger endurance plan; this books just looks at weights and doesn't even do that very well. Other reviewers are correct in saying this book is pretty much a cut and paste job--it is. Also the quality of binding and pictures looks like something that I could have made in the 1980s with a copy machine (the pictures are blurry, the type-set is just plan ugly, and the binding is flimsy). Stay away from this book; it will not help you to develop a quality weight trianing program for triathlons. Instead look at for triathlon centered books by real triathlon coaches or triathletes. P.S. Notice that all of the positive reviews are from "a reader"? It makes me think that this is the publisher, rather than real triathletes who would rated this book so high. 2 stars (Not for this triathlete) - I have a personal training studio, have done several triathlons and sat on my bike for 6 hours or more. I bought the book thinking it would spark up my weight routine and give new ideas. I was disappointed to say the least. This author is not even a triathlete. He is a bodybuilder, yes we need high reps, but we need core strength, balance, and power. There was none of this in the book. 2 stars (Nothing but cut and pasted old school exercises ) - You might confuse this book for a '70s Joe Weider weight training manual. Apparently this company cranks out dozens of these "sport specific" books (lacross, hockey, etc) with no real knowledge into the actual sport. They must have a template doc which they do a search & replace from "hockey" to "triathlon". I can imagine a guy at a desk thinking - "hhmm, triathletes use their arms right?" and cut & pasting a couple of standard arm exercises in. Almost nothing about core, balance, or endurance. You'd be much better off with... 5 stars (Practical wisdom) - John Wooden succinctly explains the principles that he lives his life by. He interestingly weaves personal stories and practical wisdom together to make the lessons he wants to convey strong and memorable. In a culture that bases success on wins and losses, John Wooden offers a shocking alternative definition, simply that success is peace of mind which is a direct result of knowing that an athlete has done all he can to become their best. His incredible performance at UCLA shows that when executed meticulously, such a philosophy can produce wins, and more importantly, great role models. 5 stars (Incredible.) - This book was incredible. Every sentence rang with meaning, every word could be used to change the course of one's life toady. This book has had a tremendous impact on my life, and, now, I follow the book's advice, and 'make every day my own masterpiece'. John Wooden is not just an incredible coach, he can write an absolutely incredible book as well. A combination of 'Chicken Soup' and a philosophy book, this book now occupies the spot of honor on my shelf. Thank you so much, Mr. Wooden . 5 stars (Simply a Great Lesson from a Great man!) - This book is a must read for every parent, teacher, and coach. AND it should be a must read for every high school student and athlete. This should be at the top of every high school English teacher's required reading list for their students. It would certainly provide far more benefit than some of the "classics" they are now required to read. If more kids read this book at an early age, it would help them understand many values in life that unfortunately many don't discover until much later in life, if at all. Mr. Wooden writes in such an easy to understand and concise manner that kids will find it very easy but yet very powerful reading. It wasn't written specifically for kids, but they can certainly benefit the most before they get too set in their ways. ... 2 stars (Not well written, rehashes other books.) - I have just about every book on the topic of sports performance. I've read others that were more impactful and helpful. Granted, this book is good if you're just looking for some inspiration that might eventually lead you to results. For immediate results to use on one's game, however, this book isn't it! As another reviewer said, it's clumsily written. For my hard earned money, I'd like something that I can actually use on my game right away. If you're a couch potato athlete that only watches a game, this book is probably good. My brother-in-law loves it. He's never played a sport in his life, but is a big fan. For competitive athletes who are more interested in RESULTS and can get their cliches from TV announcers, this book isn't for them. I'd give it one star, but those who've met the guy seem to like him enough to log onto amazon and write a review. Nothing personal, but I can't give this anything like the rating the others did. 5 stars (Excellence for all life's pursuits) - Mind Gym is one of my favorite books to pickup whenever I need a little inspiration and encouragement. While the many stories and quotes are derived from the world of professional athletics, the book is really about creating excellence in one's life with applicability to any pursuit and any profession. The main theme is that once one reaches a certain level of competency, the level he achieves in performance will be determined by how well he learns to utilize his mind. With this, the author takes us on a fascinating tour of the minds of some of the world's greatest coaches and athletes; their successes, their challenges, and the mental tools they employed to succeed. To borrow a line from the book, "it takes years of hard work to become an overnight success", Mind Gym is an excellent coach along the way. 5 stars (A great book from a great author) - I had the fortune of knowing Gary Mack personally when I was playing for the... 5 stars (The Standard by Which Others are Compared) - This huge book, now in its 12th edition was begun in 1963. It is intended for the education of atheletic trainers. Its primary concern is in preventing and when necessary treating sports injuries. This new 12th edition is a major upgrade to the book. It has been extensively reorganized into major sections that have related subject matter concentrated together. In addition, each chapter has been rewritten to reflect the latest techniques, equipment, procedures, and drugs that affect sports medicine. The biggest changes are in chapters devoted to the musculoskeletal injuries. These chapters have beeg significantly expanded and are now as comprehensive as possible within the scope of practice in atheletic training. Finally, each book comes with a license to use the extensive on line support for the book. This is broken into two areas. First is additional information related to each chapter including flash cards, self-quizzes, and other resources. Second is the eSims area which helps students prepare for the atheletic training certification exam. This is the standard in the industry. ... 5 stars (Core Benefits !) - what a difference this book has made in my basic body alignment. I am really taking the time to follow the simple plans of building my core and people see the results. And i am pleased with the results. 4 stars (Excellent workout, but understand the limitations) - As background, I'm a late thirties guy who has generally been active in fitness and recreational sports, but I've been out of competitive athletics since college. As such, I started with a good-but-not-great level of fitness. My reasons for starting included boredom with my routine of weightlifting and kickboxing on alternate days, as well as some reading about the merits of core conditioning as a training approach. I enjoyed this program from the beginning. I could detect improvements in flexibility and abdominal strength within a few workouts. Also, the variety was intellectually stimulating. I used the program for about 9 weeks, took a break from it, and returned. Now I am not quite as strict in sticking to the schedules lined out in the book, but rather work them in with other workouts as time and interest allow. Strengths: 1) The workouts are rigorous and concise. They seldom exceed 45 minutes if you stick to the rules about the amount of rest between sets, but you feel like you have had a good workout. 2) The program works. It helped with overall fitness and sport-specific fitness in soccer and karate. I literally have felt better and fitter than I have in years. 3) The complaint about the science of the book is being answered as research catches up with this training approach. Dynamic stretching, "core" exercises and interval training are showing up in research studies and in professional training rooms. I don't think a reader needs to feel that this is an "out there" approach to fitness. Weakness: 1) The typos should be embarrassing. Most of the time you can figure out what the author meant, but the website is full of people writing in and asking for cl... 5 stars (Useful for real-world athletes) - This book will give you an understanding of the principles that guide training for endurance sports and then give you a very practical, step-by-step method for preparing a detailed training program to achieve your goals. The plan will be based on the amount of time YOU have to train and the goals YOU set for your season. There are sections on special needs, like athletes over 40. The process does take some effort on your part, this is NOT a prefabricated plan, you have to put in the time to create it. If you are willing to do that, you will not be disappointed. (If you're not, then buy a different book, there are excellent ones that will lay out several plans for you and you pick the most appropriate one.) 5 stars (A very helpful tool) - I am a novice triathlete and was looking for a good place to start. Since I don't know anyone in my area that runs in triathlons I turned to the next best thing, a book. The Triathlete's Bible has helped me set goals, training objectives, and given me all the tools and resources I need to accomplish them. It has also taught me how to plan out my work out schedule for a year down to a week so that I stay focused, especially once winter comes where I'll have to do a lot of indoor training. All and all I would say a great book for people of all different ability levels. 2 stars (absence of science) - I bought this book after reviewing some comments here on Amazon. Since I am interested in both the physiology behind training and training itself, this seemed a good choice. I thought that if it could be criticized it would be on the account of too much information rather than too little. Unfortunately, I now think otherwise. It has barely covered the basics in how to put together a plan based on the athlete's specific needs. ... 3 stars (A little confused) - First of all let me say that this is about the best ironman training book out there. However, there are several severe flaws. First, the authors are confused about their audience. It is never clear when they are talking to novices and when they are addressing elites. They float around willy-nilly first addressing one then the other. Warnings are given to beginners right in the middle of long spiels obviously addressed only to pros. I believe this book is probably meant for novice to intermmediate triatheletes. But the authors are inconsistent in their approach to this. Second, most of the equipment information is very shallow but nevertheless useful to novices. However, once again the intended audience is unclear. Thirdly, the training bricks, many workout, and much of the advice are clearly geared to triatheletes who are very advanced. Any first-timer is going to overtrain and many advanced atheletes will as well if they utilize some of these workouts. They authors recommend no more than two breakthough workouts per week!! Is anybody else reading this? So once again the audience is unclear. If the authors are going to address novices then they need to do so in a consistent way throughout the book. The same with elites and intermmediates etc. Despite these flaws I managed to extract a great deal of useful information from this book and will continue to use it. 5 stars (best triathlon book) - This is the best book on triathlon that I have read. I am training for an ironman and I refer to the book almost every day. Also, I used tips and workouts from the book for a 1/2 ironman last year and improved my time from by 2 hours. 5 stars (Very useful ironman survival tips) - First of all, Going Long is not a rehash of Triathlete's Training Bible. TTB gives you everything you need to prepare yourself physically to get to the starting line. Going Long gives you what you need to get to the finish line. The book addresses psych... 5 stars (Great for the thinking Coach) - I got this book just as I was about to coach a new teeball team and found its insight very helpful. Not a book about what drills to use but about motivation, handling people and protecting peoples love of the sport. More cerebral than I would expect in a coaching book. I used much of the material in my business career. Now I am starting his next book, "Shooting in the Dark". 5 stars (Turn your coaching career around like this book turned mine.) - I coach volleyball in grade school and junior high school, and I usually get the "B teams" (the leftovers who are not as talented as the girls on the "A" team.) Therefore, if there ever was a crying need for a book on how to coach these types of athletes, this book more than served its purpose for me. Actually, this book had a positive effect on me since it saved my coaching career. Don't get me wrong, though, this book will turn around any coach's career whether he has an A or a B team. I coached a group of 13 and 14 year old softball players the year that I purchased this book. At the beginning of the season, the only team these girls could beat was themselves; in fact, that was primarily the reason they were losing was the fact that they were beating themselves! Well, after one mediocre game, I sat the girls down on the bench and instead of reading them the riot act, I took to heart a suggestion by the author. I emphasized all the positive aspects of the game they played just to show these girls that they were capable of doing some positive things. I did this after each game from then on, win or lose. Wouldn't you know it, these same rag tag girls lost the last the last game of the season: the city championship game by one run (to a team that annihilated them by 12 runs in the first game of that season.) This was an example of positive coaching, and I've used everything in this book to my advantage to become a successful POSITIVE coach. Thanks Mr. Thompson for... 1 stars (What a Crock) - Absolutely the worst. 2/3 of the "MINI SIZE BOOK" is devoted to the subject that no one teaches TEMPO. No kidding. The other third is back to basics with the triangle take away of hands arms and shoulder-- TEMPO? and then a CD that makes you swing as if you were on speed with beep, beep, beep, sounds. What a waste of money. 5 stars (Tour Tempo helped my game) - It is well researched and easy to grasp the concept. I downloaded the CD (comes with the book) to my iPod and took it to the range, and listened in the car on the way. The tempo feels fast on the backswing, but I believe that is the key. Less time spent on the backswing forces me to take the club back on plane with less extraneous hip/knee/elbow/wrist movement. e.g. Less to go wrong. I am a 16 handicap. I normally hit my 7 iron about 155 yards, but today I hit my 7 iron 175 yards, over the back of the green. It took me a few holes to dial in my yardages, but by the end of the round I had it going and was 1 over for the final 6 holes. Are you ready to strike the ball more consistently and get yardages like what we see from the PGA pros?? Then buy Tour Tempo, it is the real deal. 5 stars (This is a univeral truth) - The "tempo" is real. Hundreds of touring pros have been measured, "timed", and they are all one of three to four swing tempos...we're talking parts of seconds here. Almost all amateurs swing too slow...learn the "tour tempo" that fits you and you will hit the ball longer and straighter and more constently....PERIOD. ...
