Horse Owner-s Veterinary Handbook

5 stars (Excellent health reference ) - I have several books in my library which cover equine health but this is certainly the most comprehensive. The book is set out in chapters which cover the major systems of the horse - respiratory, circulatory, nervous, reproductive etc Each chapter then starts with a complete explaination of that system and follows with an alphabetic listing of the problems or diseases. There are plenty of clear photos and diagrams and there are two further indexes to help you to find what you are looking for or to cross-reference information. I would certainly recommend this as the book to get, especially if you can only afford to get one health reference book. 5 stars (horse owner's veterinary handbook) - This book will come in very handy and is very simple to understand. I love this book 5 stars (It's a MUST have) - Very informative ... and in plain old english. ...

How to Be Your Dog-s Best Friend- The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners Revised - Updated Edit

5 stars (How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend: The Classic Training Manual for Dog Owners (Revised & Updated Edition)) - Everything was just as described. I would definitely order from them again. 5 stars (Best dog book) - Anyone that has a dog or that is getting a dog should read this book it is helpfull in many different areas. they teach you has to treat your dog in the best way. Toniann 5 stars (Clear, complete & concise advice.) - The Monks of New Skete make training and understanding your dog a simple, straight forward journey. They explain the need to not only train the dog but how important it is to listen as well. Respect on both parts of the relationship is paramount. The Monks have proven through the years that quiet confidence on the part of the owner wins both the heart and trust of man's best friend. ...

The Cautious Canine

2 stars (Cautious of this book on canines) - I don't feel this book has a workable solution to the problem. It is a method that requires much more than most people can give to the problem. The book is actually a booklet and the cost was too much for what it offers. 2 stars (Nice Magazine Article) - I guess I should have noticed the "29 pages" in the description. It's 15 pages of 8x10 paper folded in half, two staples, and a cover. That works out to 19.83 cents per page. Amazon's paperback "War and Peace" [$10.46] at 1472 pages would cost $291.95 if published by Dr. McConnell. Calling this a book or booklet seems a little much. Perhaps "pamphlet" is a better descriptor. 5 stars ( The Cautious Canine ) - Brilliant little book. Did not teach me anything new in the way of sit, down, stay but gave me a plan to follow with my 2yr old abused, re-homed (for the third time) Rottweiler. With in 7 days and many treats she gave me her first glance when one of her many 'triggers' (other dogs, running children, fast bikes, strange men) came close. A sure sign we were going in the right direction. If you have a dog that will not listen to you while on your walks and lunges for other dogs YOU NEED THIS BOOK! ...

Dog Owner-s Home Veterinary Handbook

5 stars (Excellent Book!!!) - Wow, excellent book!!! I have had four German shepherds altogether, (now currently three), and I was able to find very helpful information inside this book. I don't know how I've been without it all these years. Of course, it won't replace a veterinarian; however, it does give you a heads-up on what is going on & what a possible remedy would be. So far, it's been very accurate! 5 stars (This book is super!) - I can't begin to say how often this book has come in handy. I have had to look things up for my three dogs as well as numerous friends and their pets. It gives me peace of mind in some cases and has me rush my pets to the vet in others. It's like having a vet right there in the house with you. I love it so much I'm getting more as Christmas gifts for my friends with multiple dogs. 5 stars (Great resource for canine mommies and daddies) - This book is chock full with useful, easy to understand information. I am not a vet or a vet tech and I find this book very "layperson" friendly. It discusses all aspects of the dogs well being, physically and emotionally and also provides links to veterinary organizations and their websites. One of my favorite sections of the book is the step by step guide to trimming a dog's nails and how to avoid the dreadful "quick" vein and also how to take care of a boo-boo if one occurs. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a canine family member! ...

Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals- A Comprehensive Guide to the Use of Essential Oils and Hydrosols

5 stars (Excellent help) - Although the information in this book is new to me, and seems a little complicated at first, it may very well be the help I need for my nervous Terrier. 5 stars (Great read ...) - This is a great book ... very well written and very thoughtfully written. I enjoyed reading it and Kristen Leigh Bell is obviously knowledgeable; I also appreciate that she takes a cautious and conservative approach to usage of EOs in animals. That being said, I bought this book specifically to learn how to use EOs with cats, and learned that you really can not use straight EOs for cats - hydrosols only. So, while that is great to know, had I know that in advance I likely would not have purchased the book. Still a great read. 5 stars (First Rate!) - Since I have three beloved little dogs, I am a person devoted to providing the very best for my little furry friends. This book has been a lifesaver in caring for them. It has given me so many options for behavior and/or health disorders. Kristen Leigh Bell is apparently the "expert" in her field and it shows through and through this book. If you are interested in natural provisions for animal care, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book. Definitely an authoritative guide. ...

Puppies for Dummies

5 stars (super helpful book) - We were going crazy with Lilly, our now 4 month old black lab. I ordered this book, it arrived super fast and it has saved us from complete insanity. It is so packed full of tips and timesavers! I highly recommend it to all new puppy moms and dads! 5 stars (Finally The Help I Needed :)) - I have had dogs all of my grown life and just added another puppy to the mix. Wish I'd found this book years ago. It makes training your puppy to be a great companion a cinch! Great advice. 1 stars (unrealistic) - While it would be great to feed my puppy only holistic dog food, keep him tied to me all day long, and not take him for car rides or leave him alone until he was an adult, it is completely unrealistic. I don't want to raise a spoiled dog, but I plan on playing tug-of-war with him on occasion and even hugging and kissing him before I leave him for the afternoon, against this book's advice. The author also only touches upon some of the most important and basic training info I was searching for by buying this book. Save your money! ...

The Art of Raising a Puppy

5 stars (Wonderful Book) - This is a leader of the pack style book and it is excellent. It is informative and well writte. I also recommend the Kilcommon book Good Owner, Great Dog which uses a similar approach with distinct verbal commands as opposed to the universal "No" that this book recommends. Both are excellent. 5 stars (some things i never thought of) - I have had 4 dogs, but i learned some new things from this book, I have never thought of before. Its good. 5 stars (Great book!) - This book is loaded with detailed information necessary to successfully raise a puppy. From the first night you have your puppy away from its mother, to how to train him/her, to how to recognize aggression in a dog's stance, it is a great resource. ...

Horse Anatomy- A Coloring Atlas

5 stars (Wonderful learning tool!) - I am an instructor/trainer and this book is wonderful for informing students how the horses body is put together and why some horses move differently than others. It also gives the student a chance to see the inside workings of the horse so that they better understand the vet and farrier when they have to explain what is wrong with the horse and treatment options. This book would also benefit anyone who wants to know more about the horse's anatomy. Not to mention it is fun to color! 5 stars (Nice Muscle Sketches) - I wish that I had this book last year. I did a muscle and joint force project for which I needed detailed muscle diagrams of the horse's hindquarters. When I needed the illustrations, of course, I could not find any that had the appropriate level of detail (not online, through videos, books, etc). For this reason when I recently saw this book it. I would strongly recommend that any other rider or person with a starting interest in horse healthcare do the same. This is an excellent addition to a equine reference library. My version is spiral bound and had clear crisp black and white illustrations that can be xeroxed or colored in. 5 stars (perfectly simple) - The coloring atlas of horse anatomy is a wonderful tool for the study and understanding of the horse anatomy. It is presented to the viewer in a form of simplicity but at the same time with unmatchable professionalism and details, evidently the author has a great respect, knowledge and understanding of the noble animal and the viewer as well. The atlas is easily approachable by the first time student for its easy and clear graphical and illustrative format. The idea of "do it yourself" it's great. Coloring the components of the horse anatomy while studying it helps the anatomist to impress the subject in his/her mind with remarkable and undeleting results. One of his kind. Without any doubt necessary for a serious study of the horse anatomy. ...

Horses for Dummies

4 stars ( Horses for Dummies ) - This is a great book. I liked the content and was able to get good advice on riding and taking care of my horse. It had been some time since I had ridden a horse and the review was very good for me. This book is great for beginners or advanced riders. 4 stars (BACK IN THE SADDLE...FOR THE FIRST TIME!) - HORSES FOR DUMMIES does an excellent job of introducing the horse lover to the ins and outs of horses and horse ownership. The book paints a fairly accurate picture of all that is involved in getting started, covering the gamut of gadgets and tack necessary, a variety of veterinary issues, housing, feeding, training...you name it. A good, sound preliminary overview. The one drawback to the book is that the authors go way overboard with trying to help the reader assess whether horse ownership is a realistic option. It seemed to me that they had perhaps seen some severe situations where people bought horses that really shouldn't have and they then vented their frustrations into this book. As a result they, in some cases, use a sledgehammer to swat the horse fly when a fly swatter would suffice. If taken too literally the book would be titled YOU DON'T REALLY WANT TO HAVE HORSES, DO YOU? and drive everyone except diehard cowboys away from even considering owning horses. Yes, owning horses is a big responsibility but I have only heard of a few extremely rare cases where horses truly suffered as the result of unprepared owners. However, I see this as a minor thing. Read the book for the great information that it imparts and don't let the stump speeches about whether you are ready to own a horse by the authors get in the way. THE HORSEMAN 5 stars (Very Informative) - Having been around horses most of my life, but never owning one, this book was a great help! I purchased it along with "The Whole Horse Catalog." Both books were on the same "page", if you will, regarding very important aspects of owning a horse, such as feeding, shoeing,...

Culture Clash

2 stars ("Positive Training" = A Negative Learning Experience?) - I admire Jean Donaldson and her ideas. And what a pleasure it was to read something by a trainer who has a "so what?" attitude toward the "rules" about showing your dog you're alpha. She really sticks it to trainers whose techniques rely too much on the old alpha myth* (which accounts for the two stars, above). But what Donaldson fails to realize is that operant conditioning is almost as big a myth as the alpha theory (which accounts for there only being two stars). One of her main points is that "traditional" training (meaning dominance) creates negative side-effects, which is the main reason I gave up using those techniques years ago (in 1992) and turned to operant conditioning as a possible alternative. What I found, though, is that not all behavior can be learned (or unlearned) through conditioning. I also found that instinctive behaviors tend to override conditioned ones, and that a training system based primarily on food rewards (and by extension, clickers, since their effectiveness is dependant on the association made between the click and being given a food treat) can also create a negative learning experience for a dog. The truth is, food makes for a great inducement for most behaviors, but it's a rather shaky reinforcement. Someone reading this might say: Wait, go back a second. Did you just say that food rewards create a negative learning experience? That's impossible to believe. I mean, after all, it's called positive reinforcement, right? Yes, but "operant conditioning" works best when you use INTRINSIC REINFORCERS, meaning they're directly related to the behavior being learned. And food is not directly related to any obedience behavior other than sitting on command, or to a lesser degree to coming when called. On the other hand, EXTRINSIC REINFORCERS, which is what food usually is, don't work as well. Not only that but, according to the behavioral textbooks, extrinsic reinf...

Dog Training for Dummies

4 stars (Not just for Dummies) - This book was both useful and interesting for old hat dog owners and new ones as well. I initially found it at a friend's house and while flipping through the chapters I decided I needed one for myself. Though I am very familiar with dogs, the behvioural sections helped me get a handle on my new puppies' quirks and demands, particularly the section on typing your dog's profile. They were a new breed for me, and rescues, so I appreciated the explanation of behaviours I was not familiar with. I liked this book enough to send it on to my parents when they recently got a new dog as well. I did not find the homeophatic information very helpful at all, however I don't think the inclusion of that information outweighed the potential benefit of owning the book. 3 stars (Mixed bag) - I thought the parts of this book that talked about training were, for the most part, quite good. The authors give clear instructions and reasons for their practices. For example, don't say "no" to your dog; tell him what you want him to do instead. If he's jumping, say sit, for example. Be consistent. Reinforce commands. Say commands only once. I could give more examples, but you get the idea: sound, sane, and humane advice. The advanced training sections started to lose me a bit. I found them tedious after a while. Although the authors are very experienced with all aspects of caring for dogs, I thought they were reaching a bit with their nutritional and medical advice. They talked about homeopathic remedies as though they're proven treatments. They're not. Anecdotal evidence is not the same as statistically significant results from controlled studies. Their opinion on vaccines seemed dangerous and unbalanced. They have too much confidence in their alternative nutrition and treatment methods -- maybe they have some effect, but they're not perfect. A well-fed dog could still get fleas and infections and communicable diseases. After a while, t...

John Lyons- Bringing Up Baby- 20 Progressive Ground-Work Lessons to Develop Your Young Horse into a

5 stars (Easy Read) - This was very easy to read and extremely informative book. Couldn't put it down until I finished it. 5 stars (John Lyons IS the best horse in the paddock!) - As a professional horse trainer who lives her craft, I give John Lyons a TON of credit for making me the horsewoman I am today. John is known as America's Most Trusted Horseman and I'll take it a step further and call him the guy who writes THE how-to books on training. John's not a bells and whistles kind of guy, just one heck of a great trainer. If you purchase only one book on horse training, I suggest this reasonably priced book that beautiflly illustrates how John builds a foundation of trust and respect. If you are able to apply the basic principles illustrated, you will be able to improve any horse, regardless of age or experience - and I mean that for both you and your horse. The book features 20 progressive ground-work lessons to develop your horse into a reliable, accepting partner. I Give It 4 Hooves Up! 4 stars (Good Book) - I have this book and have used some of the things in it. It's not really what I need for my horse. She's two, really hyper, green and distracted. The instruction in the book is great. I just needed more of a detailed...do this, this might happen, fix it like this...book. I'm new at this. She's the first horse I've tried to train. I've been around horses for most of my life but training is alot different I'm learning. I have a new baby horse on the way though and I know this will be an invaluable resource for training her(or him). Along with Dr. Miller's Imprint Training. I would recommend this book. But I have really found alot of help in Clinton Anderson's new book. With all these books combined my horse and I are doing good and I know we'll both learn alot. It's a good book and valuable addition to anyone's library. ...

Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats

5 stars (The Great Resource) - This book is the best and most easy to read for up to date holistic treatments for your pet. I own a lot of animal books, and this one is a keeper!! 4 stars (A great starting point) - Having known relativley little on the subject of raw natural diets, I found this book to be an excellent starting point. It is easy to read, consise, to the point, and is very encouraging for the novice. It has a sample monthly menu which I found invaluable when changing my dogs over to the nautral diet. I have since read many books on the subject but I refer back to this book the most. I would have liked more specific information regarding feeding puppies and their specific growing needs. 3 stars (Too basic, even for a beginner) - I was new to RAW feeding prior to buying this book. I had done some research and reading on the Internet and already understood the concept of RAW feeding - the core food groups and the recommended proportions of each. However, I needed a book that would help me make the transition from just reading to actually preparing the meals for my pets. This book did not do it for me. It is more of a very basic "theory" book than a "practical" one. I bought the book online - if I had had a chance to flip through it first, I would have gone with another book. This book pretty much just explains what the food groups are, how they contribute to the health of your pets and the respective pros and cons. But, like I said, you can get this information for FREE on the Internet! Schultze only gives ONE easy recipe for BOTH dogs and cats, with varying amounts of ingredients depending on the weight of your pet. After joining a few RAW feeding discussion lists, I was told that most of the things I read in the book are NOT recommended by fellow raw feeders (eg: feeding GROUND meat, veggies, kelp & alfalfa supplements and BOTH cod-liver oil and fish oil, etc.) Even I knew going in that you can't use the same recipe for both dogs and cats and yet Schu...

101 Arena Exercises - A Ringside Guide for Horse - Rider

2 stars (In an enlightened age, Cherry is still old school) - Cherry Hill has come up with some neat little exercise books to offer you training ideas. But she has some outdated ideas on horse training. Compare the advice you get in her book "The Formative Years" with some of the more enlightened trainers published in the last 20 years. 5 stars (A valuable addition to your equestrian library.) - The number of excellent reviews for this book reflect the application to riders of all levels and disciplines. The most valuable aspect of this book is that it encourages the rider to formulate a plan for their schooling sessions and make a conscious decision not to do the same thing day in day out - something we are all guilty of on occasion. Make your schooling sessions more fun for you and your horse with this informative guide. 5 stars (good for both disciplines) - We love this book! Cherry Hill is such a good author, she explains things in such a way that they are understandable and useful, not just a concept that you might not be able to use. This book will give you and your horse a chance to practice different exercises and break out of the old walk-trot-canter-one-way-around the ring rut. I think this has helped myself and our two horses greatly in our training process. ...

The Dog Listener- Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation

5 stars (The Dog Listener) - This book is one of the best on understanding dogs and also for training them. Our daughter Dr. Shannon Dominguez DCH who is head of the Maui Animal Therapy Program --- highly recommends this book. [...] She has trained therapy dogs in a short time using these methods. We have adopted two little terriers from shelter and they are respondeing beautifully to the day by day suggestions on how to train young as well as old dogs and we would say these methods would work on children :- ) as well!! 4 stars (A review on the author) - Although the book is great, it speaks for itself and I'm not here to review it. I emailed the author, or someone who works with her, at the email address I got from Jan's website. First of all, a little background. I have a two-year-old border collie/lab who I've had since he was seven weeks. I adore him. I have been working from home with the occasional temp job up until two months ago. I now work 5 days a week outside the house. I wrote to this person asking advice on certain things relating to walking the dog, and mentioned the hours my dog is being left alone while I'm at work. My response was that I am "selfish" and unfit to have a dog. This coming from someone who was once so clueless about raising dogs that she put one of her own to sleep. I have been looking into getting a dogwalker for my pooch, which as a person concerned for dogs, she could have suggested. But her only suggestion was my poor dog, I shouldn't have him. Whereas the book is a good read with good methods, I would suggest a second thought before asking her or her staff any questions personally. She, or whoever that was, is rather selective in the dogs she'll help according to what she thinks of their owners. It was a negative experience trying to get any kind of advice from them. Rather than pointing out something wrong and offering suggestions to rectify it to someone who is obviously open to change, she chose instead to s...

Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds

5 stars (Excellent source of information) - I really enjoyed going thru this encyclopedia. It helped me judge which dog was right for my family. 5 stars (Great Reference Book on Dog Breeds) - This book features profiles and beautiful color photographs of more than 150 dog breeds, including information about AKC standards. The book also rates the different breeds for such tendencies as energy level, playfulness, ease of training, watchdog capabilities, heat tolerance, etc. (summary by South Texas Library System) You may not need this on your bookshelf at home, but do consult it at your public library before choosing a dog. It's sad to see the wrong breed suffering because it's too active, not good with children, etc. Many behaviors are inherent in a breed and it's a mistake to ignore that. 5 stars (Best dog breed book ever) - If you just want to read about different dog breeds, or if you want to know which breed is best suited to you and your lifestyle, this is the book to buy. This book is an ocean of information. You can find out the history of the breeds, the difficulty or ease of maintaining a specific breed, the personality of a specific breed. The pictures are beautiful. The information is concise and easy to read and understand, even for the person like myself, who knows nothing about dog breeds. I couldn't put this book down. It's one of the favorite books for our whole family in our library (this one and the cat breeds book). ...

The New Marine Aquarium- Step-By-Step Setup - Stocking Guide

5 stars (Almost Perfect) - This book is one of the best books I found. If your not sure which book to buy, check the library for your title and go through it there. Step by step with check lists and tips. Explainations on just about everything. One problem I had to figure out myself was the plenum system. The author goes over it briefly but found no extra benifit. More research has led me to believe that the plenum could be used as an undergravel filter for serveral months. Upon setup and first water tests you could start to stock your tank without the worries of the tank going through cycles. Best book on Marine tank set up I've found...hands down. 3 stars (Not good enough) - Although very easy to read and understand, the book is very basic in every aspect. It has some nice pictures, and the fish description section is very good. This book doesn't talk about calcium aditions to the home reef, which is an escencial aspect of reef keeping. Also it gives little information on lighting, and the different kinds of lights. Lighting is also escencial and it surprises me how the book doesn't have much information about it. Also it talks about some types of filters that can be use, which are really not important or good for the reef aquarium. I would suggest more complete readings by J.Sprung 5 stars (Best book ever to get started) - This is the best single book in my library for those getting started in the hobby. I was lucky enough to buy this before setting up my own. The book is clear and concise with nice diagrams and pictures. This book lets you know what you're getting yourself into, without discouraging the reader. It doesn't confuse the reader with many different options which may be welcome to a more experienced aquariust. A must have if your starting out, and still a nice addition if you already have experience. ...

A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Invertebrates- 500+ Essential-to-Know Aquarium Species

5 stars (This book saved me from disaster!) - Thanks to this book I was able to identify the fact that I had inadvertently introduced a small Mantis Shrimp into my reef tank thru the purchase of living rock. Mantis Shrimp can, when fully grown, either kill your fish, or even break the glass of your aquarium! When I realized what it was, I was able to get the shimp out of my tank. This is an excellent book which can help you to choose appropriate invetebrates for your tank. The descriptions help you to understand their needs and any possible compatibility issues with other invertebrates. This pocket guide is small enough to take with you when you go to your local fish store so you can check before you buy. 4 stars (Great reference) - This is an invaluable tool to use when shopping for marine invertibrates; its convenient to take with you and do a bit of spot research on animals you find in the fishstore and might be considering purchasing, so that you can make an informed decision. it briefly covers the different types of corals you might find and various motile (moving) invertibrates like crabs, snails, etc. Also on each entry is given: minimum tank size, lighting requirements, reef aquarium compatibility, captive care, foods and feeding, maximum size, and place of origin. Also I recommend the other 'sister' book, Marine Fishes by Scott W. Michael. 5 stars (Biggest Bang For Your Buck Out There In Aquarium Books) - The two "500+ Essential-to-Know Aquarium Species Books" are the biggest bang-for-your-buck aquarium stocking and general information books out there. Even though both of the books, Marine Fishes (ISBN: 1890087386 by Scott W. Michael) & Marine Invertebrates (ISBN: 1890087661 by Ronald Shimek) are pocket guides, they offer so much more information than the other books that I have seen. They don't waste space telling you about fish that you will never see in an aquarium and instead give relatively in-depth information on the species that you are likely to ...
