Survey of Mathematics with Applications- A 7th Edition

4 stars (EXCELLENT REFERENCE FOR BEGINNING & ADVANCED UNDERGRADUATES) - I have been teaching out of Angel & Porter for the last three years. It has quite a few good examples, though I agree with the first reviewer's comment that it does need more challenging problems. Among the topics I have covered are: inductive reasoning, set concepts, symbolic logic, truth tables, algebra, applied geometry, probability, statistics, and mathematics of finance. Though the examples are laid out fairly well for those who are mathematically inclined, the teacher who happens to have quite a few students with weak mathematical skills is often finding himself or herself in situations of having to create ways to become an effective expositor of mathematical theorems and applications. In other words, by trying to explain what the authors are providing in their examples, the instructor is frequently shouldering the added burden of making this book come to life not only from a mathematical perspective but also from a communicative standpoint. On a positive note, however, there are several excellent applications, and the range of topics is quite broad. Oftentimes there is a gap between the level of advanced high school mathematics and that of a four-year university that is so serious that even a student who performed A's in high school will struggle in the type of college math course he or she is placed in. 5 stars (View From a Math Tutor) - I have tutored math for over 20 years and Bittenger's book is one of the best I have ever seen for taking pre-algebra students from the basics to the complex. His examples are clearly laid out, easy to follow, and they lay a solid foundation for higher math learning. This book's concepts will definitely help high school students prepare for the SATs. 5 stars (Great self study book.) - I'm 38 and am a home schooler and to get back into math mode, I chose this book. I did every odd problem and some of the systhesis problems. You will learn the material if you take the time. I spent around 14 or 15 months to get through the book. The program is excersises and review. Constant review is huge plus. I recommend you get the solutions manual from addison wesley. I've just started Marv's et.al.. Precalculus book and then will go onto calculus. I'm enjoying the math. Much more then in high school. My son and I sit down and learn together. He says "get your book" and lets do math. 5 stars (Further adventures with algebra...) - This book is currently being used by the community college where I tutor as a book for the internet version of Intermediate Algebra, a course that most of our two-year degree programmes require as part of the mathematics requirement, and one of the most 'popular' courses at the tutor centre. Because this book is used by the internet course, it has to be well crafted to enable students to learn from on their own, and indeed, it seems to pass muster on that account. The organisation of the book is fairly standard for algebra texts of this level: basic number theory is introduced (which should be a refresher or review from previous basic mathematics or algebra courses), the linear equations and inequalities are introduced, with equations of one variable, some elementary set operations, and the concept of inequalities. The third chapter introduces graphs, with the x-y coordinate axis, two-variable equations introduced. The fourth chapter looks at systems of equations, both in two and three variables, and introduces matrix methodology. The fifth chapter develops the ideas of exponents, introducing scientific notation and polynomial multiplication and division. This is a prelude to factoring, the subject of chapter six. Trinomial factors, special cases and general approaches are discussed, including the grouping method and trial-and-error. Chapter seven looks at rational expressions, complex fractions, and applications that build upon the factoring. Chapter eight introduces roots and radicals as a prelude to the quadratic equation in chapter nine. Graphing of functions such as parabolas is developed here. It has helped a lot with class and I'm glad that I bought this item! 5 stars (Elementary Statistics) - Elementary Statistics with StatDisk is a very well laid out text making the introduction to new concepts easy. The text assists with Excel, TI-83 family of caluculators and gives comprehensive tips for using StatDisk. Z tables are included with the text on heavy paper stock. 4 stars (Good start in STATS) - I used the 8th edition in my intro STATS class a year ago and I loved the book. I found that he talks about the meaning of stuff and not just gives quick excel fixes like a lot of intro STAT books. He does go over how to do the problem on the TI-83 but he still goes over the formulas and how you can do with out. In my last intro stats book my department had it talked too much about excel and the calculator making students forget that this is math and not just plug in the number ...

Conceptual Physics

5 stars (Speedy) - The book is just as they said. They told me it didn't include a workbook the same day I bought it. I told them that was ok, and if they could just mail it as soon as possible and I got it extremely fast! 4 stars (Math Lite? Hello, Check the Title! ) - I have seen several scathing reviews here, based on the fact this text is not Math Intensive; but that is exactly the point of the book! I can teach kids who previously had little interest in the sciences and none in Physics, and suck 'em right on in to the beauty of understanding how the world works. We can then progress to other resources for "Problem Solving". I agree that by itself, this is not adequate preparation for the AP Exams. It does, however, provide the framework for understanding what we are working toward, and getting the attention of the non- "Math-head" students, so they can see some point to the science. Since many, many adolescents have a hard time applying themselves to subject matter which seems purely theoretical, this an invaulable service. I believe every student should start with Conceptual Physics . Every educated person should have some basic understanding of these ideas, even if he or she is a (gasp!) Liberal Arts type. Those who wish to pursue engineering, obviously, should then progress further, with a more mathematically challenging follow-on text. 5 stars (Worth it!) - I must say that this is one of the few physics text you should have if you are having trouble trying to understand what is being taught in class. Though this book is clearly lacking in actual mathematical examples (you might need another one for that), you will go away having grasped the concepts necessary in helping you understand what your teacher is trying to get across as well as how the mathematical equations involved in physics work out. 3 stars (the book not in good condition) - I expect more frpm the item, comparing with the written review by the seller. Price acceptable. 5 stars (One of the better university mathematics textbooks) - This textbook is by far one of those actually worth buying. I struggled through that awful, miserable excuse for a calculus text by Edwards and Penney, and was a little more impressed with Stewart and Anton. But I pulled out of my calculus courses and decided to get a bit more preparation in before taking them again. I started out with Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus P. Thompson and Martin Gardner, then went back to by old high school texts and made sure I understood everything. You don't need those huge, expensive Elementary and Intermediate Algebra texts; you can get away with Introductory Mathematics by Petocz, Petocz and Wood, published by Nelson/Thomson Learning (http://www.nelson.com.au). What you need to understand calculus is a good intuitive feel for algebra and to know *why*, not just *how*. There's a big difference. Once you've spent a couple of months sweating over your algebra, geometry and trigonometry texts, it's then time to reap the rewards and learn calculus. Thomas and Finney's Calculus and Analytic Geometry is extremely well written, with the right balance between applied mathematics for scientists and engineers and pure mathematics (proofs and stuff like that). If you're a math major, or intending to become a math major, then you'll want to use this book along with Apostol's Calculus and Spivak's Calculus. One thing I learned the hard way was that putting off mathematics has the effect of slamming the doors in your face. Interesting and useful university courses are out of reach, career options are out of reach, and you're left in the dark when it comes to science and technology. I like the exercise reviews after each class and the test at the end of each chapter it is very helpful. I really recomend this book. 5 stars (The Best Jr. High Math Curriculum) - I'm a homeschooling mom of 7, and this is the best math curriculum I've ever used for Jr. High. Two of my daughters have used this in 7th and 8th grades and then went right into algebra without any problems. This book is so thorough in explaining each process that very little help was ever needed, and since then they've used this same company's curriculum to teach themselves algebra and geometry. 1 stars (Now I'm scared! ) - I'm getting ready to take Intermediate Algebra using a text by this author. I will be required to take College Algebra next term and am hoping, after reading your reviews, that this is NOT the book that will be required for the class. Did anyone get value from "math help" websites? Thanks! 1 stars (I think I know why they use this book) - After reading the previous reviews for this book, I realized one question kept surfacing. Why? Why did my instructor choose this book? A very likely answer is this book could have been chosen based on the margin of profit the school bookstore makes off of it. I don't know this for certain, but I have encountered similiar problems with texts chosen when I was in college. A useless, high-priced text book was often a sign of a greedy college bookstore. I would tend to suspect this when we were required to spend quite a bit for inferior texts--esp. ones that changed editions often (requiring you to buy the 'newest' book). The instructor may have had little to do with the choice. I don't have much to say about this particular book, but when in this type of situation there are a few steps you can take. Attend every class and take good notes. If you notice most of the other students don't understand a particular concept, go to the instructor and ask that the lesson be repeated. Use the book only to work the assigned problems- use your notes for the methods.
