5 stars (Of Man and the River) - If you thought Hurricane Katrina packed a devastating whallop to the Louisiana and Mississippi Coast, wait until you read this engrossing story of the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood which inundated the entire Misssissippi Delta. Barry does a great job of providing the background for the levee system which has repeatedly failed the Delta because beauracrats were unwilling to bend to any common sense when it came to handling the mighty Mississippi. They insisted on building their levees higher and wider, channeling the river into a raging torrent come high water. The Army Corps of Engineers chose to cling to outdated manuscripts rather than study the situation first hand, which was repeatedly asked for by civil engineers who saw a monumental crisis in the making. Barry makes a good case for Eads' proposal for jetties in deepening the mouth of the Mississippi and creating a greater flow of water into the Gulf of Mexico. While this was done primarily to increase navigation into and from the Port of New Orleans, jetties would have made a lot more sense than a system of levees that essentially served to choke the river. To make matters worse the Corps systematically closed off spillways and refused to cut canals even after the 1922 flood should have served as a warning call. But, Barry treats the rising Mississippi as a metaphorical tool as well, describing Jim Crow South in intimate detail, contrasting the bigoted paternalism of the Percy family with the malignant growth of the Ku Klux Klan, and its impact on Southern politics. It is a well written book that focuses mostly on the Mississippi Delta, the cultural and economic battle for this prized acreage and the river that would ultimately engulf the region. 5 stars (Prophetic and lively read) - John Barry's superb RISING TIDE can be viewed through many prisms, but obviously today, we will all see it through post-Hurricane Katrina eyes. 5 stars ( Night ) - Night Author Elie Wiesel Have you ever been tortured to the point when you just want to give up and die? Well, Elie and his father have been through this experience. Elie is a young fifteen year old teenager who would battle for his right in any situation. He also lives with his father. He was born in a little town called Sighet in Transylvania and lived a modern life until the Nazis came to Elie's home town and started to gather up the jews. They were put into trains that were so crammed that you couldn't even sit down. No one had a clue where they were going. They then arrived at a concentration camp called Auschwitz. The sight of seeing children being thrown into the crematories made Elie think...is my life going to end here? Elie and his father were treated like rats and lived off of every scrap of food possible. All of a sudden Elie and his father had to change camps and head out to another concentration camp called Buchenwald. They had no transportation. The officers forced them to run nonstop to get there. Elie's father tried to give up and die in his sleep, but Elie kept trying to pursued his father to keep running until they could reach the camp. People were being trampled and many were freezing to death from the cold. No one cared, no one bothered to give any food, and the only thing Elie could think about was is there a way to survive? Or is this the end? Find out yourself and read the heart stopping thriller called Night (You won't believe what you will read!). Night is my most favorite book of all time, even though it is the most disturbing book that I have ever read. If you are not into the type of books that have love stories, drama, and happy endings I suggest you read this book. If you did not like The Diary of Anne Frank it would be better to read this book because it really explains how cruel the Nazis were to the poo... 5 stars (How Could We Have Not Known This Had Happened?) - A mass murderer with victims possibly numbering in the hundreds in the midst of the World's Fair of Chicago in the early 1900's? A fascinating read. A mostly historical perspective of a huge (almost impossible) undertaking (not just a World's Fair, but an entire self-sustaining city!), with suspense and horror sprinkeled throughout as we learn about the suave, diabolical Dr. Holmes as he lured his unsuspecting, charmed victims to their death. I enjoyed learning about this part of Chicago history. I enjoyed every page! 4 stars (Wondefully Written) - I grew up in Chicago in the 1940's and was always fascinated with Chicago's history, and how it evolved - both struggles and triumphs. My Grandmother was born in the early 1880's. She remembered the "Columbian Exposition" as the most magical thing she had ever experienced. Anyone who has any history in Chicago will love this book. I know it is considered "history," but it is written within a novel's contexts, and is very readable and enjoyable. I hope that Erik Larson will give all of us insight into other historical occurrences as well. 5 stars (Wonderful History lesson) - Such a great way to learn a piece of American History. The book read like fiction, but it was all true! I'm amazed at the amount of time and research that went into this book. It was the monthly book club selection. Great choice!!! ... 5 stars (The greatest book on Art Deco!) - This book is an absolute triumph. First, it is positively gorgeous - the images just leap off the pages. Second, the essays are more in-depth, engaging, and informative than any other book I've found on the subject. This book discusses every facet of Art Deco as well: it explores the origins at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, goes through the influence in East Asia, Latin America, and South Africa, not to mention Europe. A great chapter on Deco in Hollywood; also explores all of the sources, iconography - and all of this on top of covering every aspect of the movement - ceramics, jewelry, fashion, architecture, glass, photography, graphic design, bookbindings, travel and transport, and so so much more - with stunning visuals. A fantastic read, a great resource, a beautiful work, and an absolute MUST for anyone interested in the subject! Well worth the money, and a fantastic addition to any library. Highly recommended! 5 stars (The first and last word on Deco.) - A sumptuous coffee-table book of this exuberant art style and I think it could well become the standard book on the subject. The forty essays are divided into four sections, Sources and Iconography, 1925 Paris Exhibition, Spread of Deco and finally Deco World, and I liked the way, especially in Sources and Iconography, that the authors explain how various art styles were moulded into deco art which culminated in the very influential 1925 Paris show. I thought the last two sections were a fascinating coverage of how Art Deco spread around the world, mainly as architecture and fashion, though in Europe also as a fine art style. In North America, it influenced a huge range of commercial products. Perhaps this was the only art form that was truly democratic in that it was available (as streamlining) to be seen or bought on any Main Street across the Nation. The design and printing are excellent. Many of the photos, especially color, are presented whole page, the ... 5 stars (Incredibly fun) - Addicitive doesn't begin to cover it, this game is more than addictive. I've even started looking at the RPG books. 4 stars (Oh the pain..oh the pity) - If you do not floss everyday for sure, There are consequences that you must endure, A pain, a bloody pain, a toothache be what it is. Another day, another cadet, oh bony fire, oh my cheese. A melody through my ears, piercing as a metallic spear, Be cunning and agile as you may be, for now i no longer hear, I am a singing bird, on a tree or maybe on weed. I am a flying raccon, pick my nose for me please, that is my need. In my life I've loved one person, how shall I address thee. I cannot stop thinking about you, for it is time for me to pee. I am blinded by your magic. That is forbidden, sealed dark arts. But the life I once had is sucking away from me, and I must depart. But I'm hungry, so I stopped for a while. Oh, bless the poor child, the winter has come and the restaurent seems away by miles. What cursed luck, I might pass out. I am challenged, and yet it was just mere food that I sought. Mmmmm, talkin about food makes me want to stop writing this ilogical poem. A terrible, shameful poetry indeed. But I am in an urgent need. A need for food and maybe for a melon seed. But it is my warning that you must heed. Tell them that you found this review helpful or be in a flammering guilt for the rest of your life. 4 stars (Nancy Drew returns in keen retro style on her twelfth adventure) - Nancy Drew turns 75 this year, and she's still got her youthful sense of sleuthing... in fact, she's as keen as when she first came out in 1930. In honour of Nancy's 75th birthday, Her Interactive has set Nancy's newest mystery "Secret of the Old Clock" in 1930s America before the start of the depression. Nancy drives a sporty blue roadster, listens to jazz records, and talks nervously of the possible Depression, while using expressions such as "keen," "horsefeathers" and "the bee's knees." Nancy's first mystery (based on her first two books Secret of the Old Clock and Mystery at Lilac Inn) finds her investigating mysterious happenings at the Lilac Inn. The inn is run by seventeen-year-old orphaned Emily, whose mother died recently, and her guardian Jane Willoughby, but Emily has asked Nancy to come help her. It turns out that she's been hearing things, and various "accidents" have occurred. The plot quickly thickens, leaving Nancy to puzzle out an eccentric millionaire and a forged will that has high stakes for all involved: Jim Archer, banker on the edge of ruin, Richard Topham, "clairvoyant" who lives in the deceased millionaire's house, Emily and her guardian. As with previous titles, a good deal of puzzle solving is chore related, of the "I scratch your back, you scratch mine" mentality. This means that Nancy must complete chores for other characters before she can receive the necessary information (or inventory) to proceed. Some of these are easier than others: arranging pies, catching a 19-inch largemouth bass, finding toys for a children's orphanage, picking up raffle tickets, and sewing a dress (fiendishly hard, and I'm a cross-stitcher!). This game sees the addition of two new features, both of which I found unnecessarily frustrating: Nancy's blue roadster, which must be filled up with gas and keeping an eye out for flat tires, and money, which Nancy must spend to solve puzzles ... 3 stars (Good/Bad, I can't classify it, it goes all over the board) - I'm going to warn everyone looking at buying this game to make sure that their computer's specs are much more than the requirements of this game. My Computer has twice the requirements and I get really choppy performance (twice the RAM, twice the processor speed, a better than recommended graphics card, et cetera). The reason anyone's going to be looking at this game is for the lightsaber combat, which is awesome!. The problem is that when you're fighting someone else with a lightsaber, there's so much that the computer has to do, that your framerate drops to unacceptable levels. One thing to look at is this game's predecessor, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast. My computer runs that game flawlessly, even with multiple jedi duking it out with all their powers. So I don't get why my coputer can't run this as well. One area where this game is much better than it's predecessor is the maps. In Jedi Knight 2, I'm always looking at the maps and thinking about, "why is there this bottomless pit here?" Or, "How did all those guys up there shooting at me get there, there's no way up or down from there." At least in the two levels of this game that I've played (I have the demo, not the full game) everything seems to have a purpose where it is, even if it does seem a little odd (like a tomb in ruins, that's built straddling a bottomless rift) As for the story, I can't tell you whether or not it's compelling like the one in Jedi Knight 2 or not because I haven't played the full game, but from what I've read, it's a lot more contrived than it's predecessor. So beware of this game, don't play it unless your computer is at LEAST 1.25ghz and you have about 512mb RAM, otherwise you'll get stutters where you don't know what's happening. As for me, I'm not going to buy it solely because of the poor performance I've gotten on the demo, I might buy it for my xbox though, just so I can play it through. 2 stars (Could... 1 stars (Wiped out system) - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER buy this product! I installed in on my new laptop and as soon as it was done and said "reboot", my system went into a NEVER ENDING reboot cycle. I thought I had something on my computer that caused my problem. After reloading Windows XP Pro, I decided to make it the first software I would add, no other software conflicts. SAME THING, REBOOT LOOP, OVER AND OVER AND OVER. How can they sell this kind of garbage? I used 2003, 2004. Could NEVER get 2005 to install, alway an error message half way through. Maybe that was a blessing. 2006 WIPED OUT MY COMPUTER. DO NOT BUY AND DO NOT EXPECT SUPPORT WORTH A .... Support call put me in India to a person who could not get the spelling of my name and I could not understand her. DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE TWO DAYS RECOVERING YOUR SYSTEM. 4 stars (Mixed bag, incrementally better, solid (mostly) reliable performance.) - Caveat: I am comparing this to systemworks standard, 2005. Although I've been a user of symantec/norton products for about 10 years now, there has always been some bugginess about them. This is the smoothest release I've ever seen. This is also based on a 3 day review, so it's not really thorough. This also refers to the download version, which is a bit more difficult because I had to burn my own ISO boot/backup/restore disk. That aside, the reason for the 4 stars is the redundancy in ways to do the same (or very similar) thing twice, and for the minimal (if any) changes to Norton Utilities. Norton Ghost 10, for example, does automatic and manual restore checkpoints on backups. GoBack does the same thing, but it's not meant for ISO, obviously. GoBack hasn't changed much, if at all, since 2005. However, the two togther are somewhat redundant, and could be possibly merged. Safe install in Goback is now automatic, tho (i.e., "it appears you are installing a new program, you'll have the option to restore to pre-install conditions" or some suc...
